UPDATE: The info below was for the 2012 Spring hatch..

* ~ Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ ~ *

Please note: March 24, 2012
I had the chance to meet author and long time breeder of emus Janice Castleberry. She actually found that her chicks were much healthier being incubated at 95.5 and for a duration of 55 to 58 days. It IS much closer to how emus incubate in the wild with the males setting the nest for up to 60 days.. so when I do end up with more eggs to incubate I am going to try her method. The eggs would still need to lose 15% over those 58 days.. so I would need to adjust the weight loss per week and the humidity accordingly.
For anyone who is curious.. Janice has hatched out THOUSANDS of emu chicks back when emus were popular as an alternative meat source. So after many failed hatches and hatching problems she found something which worked for her and her customers.. so her methods are something to consider.. Unfortunately I found out her info a little too late to work with it for these hatches.. but knowing me I will be hatching out emus again in the future.. so I have time to experiment and see how it works for me.

NOTE TO ANYONE GETTING EMU EGGS SHIPPED IN:

I am finding that with my emu eggs the ones who have traveled the furthest seem to have done the worst...

Lampasas, Texas egg: 20 miles.. only 1 egg.. too early to tell
Heston, Kansas eggs: 548 miles.. 5 good out of 7 total (2 shipments one "dud" per shipment.. probably a fertility issue)
Elberta, Alabama egg 710 miles... 4 good out of 4 total (3 shipments) (one may be a dud... will know for sure in a few days)
Sonora, California eggs: 1718 miles.. 0 good out of 2 total (1 shipment.. probably scrambled)
Auburn, California eggs 1801 miles.. 0 good out of 2 total (1 shipment.. probably scrambled)

So I guess the moral to the story is to get eggs from breeders as close to you as possible..

Well.. my husband thinks I'm crazy. But I decided after all these years of wanting an emu or three that I would try hatching out some shipped eggs. Knowing that shipped eggs tend to have lower hatch rates than "home grown" eggs I am starting with 6 eggs (from 3 different breeders) and will add a few more as I get the other incubators emptied.

Here are the first 5.. still waiting on #6 to get here

(Old news)
From what I have been able to find out, for incubating emu eggs the general consensus is that the eggs need temperatures of 95 to 99 degrees (97.5 being the preferred temperature). A humidity between 25 and 35% and take anywhere from 49 to 55 days to hatch (with 52 being the average). They should be turned every day until day 49. The preferred method seems to be turning by hand at least 3 times a day turning them 180 degrees every time they are turned (rocked back and forth.. not rolling them over and over in the same direction each time.. if that makes any sense).
Since I can't candle the eggs I just have to hope that the postal service was kind to them while they were in transit.

For the first 6 eggs I am using a Reptipro 5000 incubator. I did notice a difference in the temperature gradient in the Reptipro, so I played around with different temperature settings until I found a nice range for two levels in the incubator which should be favorable for the emu eggs.

In my incubator the bottom eggs have a temp of 97.5 at the top of the eggs with the shelf temp having 97.5 at the bottom of the eggs. Hopefully the slight difference between the tops and bottoms of the eggs doesn't matter much as the eggs are turned. So the display on the incubator reads 99 degrees.. however the temperature where the eggs are is a bit less.

For the remaining eggs (once they arrive) I will be using the two Brinseas that I have for incubation. I have chicken eggs in them right now.. so I will wait another week or two to order the other eggs.

The first eggs that arrived came from Heston, Kansas. I received them on January 9, 2012 an let them sit for 24 hours to come to room temperature before placing in the Reptipro. Since these eggs had a code on them from the breeder i am going with the code numbers as the egg :"names". I weighed each egg and will update this page every time they are weighed.

So C-1 weighed in at 1.46 pounds (660 grams)

C-4 weighed in at 1.40 pounds (636 grams)

and C weighed in at 1.50 pounds (681 grams)

The next batch of eggs arrived today (January 11, 2012) and I will be setting them in the incubator either later today or tomorrow morning. They had no codes on them so I "named" them B-1 and B-2. They were purchased from a breeder in Auburn, California

B-1 weighed in at 1.18 pounds (534 grams)

B-2 weighed in at 1.19 pounds (539 grams)

The last egg for the Reptipro was ordered from a seller in Alabama. I only ordered one from them since the Reptipro can hold 6 eggs and I already had 5 coming from the other two breeders. It hasn't arrived yet and I have no shipping confirmation, so once it arrives I may end up putting it in one of the Brinseas if it gets here too late.

So far I have noticed a size difference between the eggs from the two different breeders. Not sure if it is due to the age of the breeder birds or if the two breeders have different strains of emus or just what. So long as something hatches I'll be a happy camper!

January 13, 2012:
Egg #6 is here! No code on this one so I am calling it "A"

Egg A came from Elberta, Alabama and weighs in at 1.38 pounds (625 grams). It will be set in the Reptipro later on today after it warms up a bit from it's trip.

For the next set of eggs I modified an old LG incubator. Originally I had planned to use the two Brinsea eco20's that I have.. but I decided to go with the LG because I could modify it to allow for more headroom for the little guys. I got the idea from another BYC member who did the same thing to theirs for hatching out emus (thank you foulman007 for the great idea!).
I had already added a fan last summer in a feeble attempt to keep the bator cooler during one of our hot spells.. it didn't help since our house temps were well past 115 at the time and we don't use AC. For this modification I used mylar foam board insulation.. cut 4 pieces that were 6 inches high, 2 that were 6.5 inches high and used the other scraps for the other 2 inside walls (they ended up being 5 inches high .. but only cause that's what was left after the initial cuts). I had to get a sheet of the insulation for the well housing (we live out in the country and have well water).. so luckily enough I had enough remnants for the incubator modification. Once the pieces were cut to size I used aluminum heat duct tape to assemble them. The two 6.5 inch tall sides are on the inside of the incubator to allow an edge for the lid to butt up against. To keep the temperature even more stable I took a thick old towel to cover the bator. I have checked the temperature several places inside and it's holding a very steady 97.5 degrees at each location
UPDATE:
We had several warm days and some rather cool nights... in taking the temperature readings in the LG I noticed where the thermometers above the eggs (resting on the top of a jar about 1" above the eggs) was reading 99.. during the cool nights the thermometer up there would read 96.. the eggs that were wiggling continued to wiggle and I had several chicks hatch out fine..
I'm sure when the upper reading was reading 96 that the bottom of the eggs was probably at 95 or a little less... those chicks hatched out on day 51.. so a slight drop in their temperatures at night did not harm them in any way.. and when the temps were reading 99 above the eggs it was more like 98 at egg level.. so slight variations in temperatures shouldn't kill your emu chicks.. just don't let the temps rise above 99 or drop below 95 and you should be fine.

* ~ Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ ~ *

The LG with 7 emu eggs... looks like I may end up having to use the Brinsea after all for those last 2 eggs when they get here!
*the glass jars filled with water are acting as heat sinks to help keep the temperature stable.

Got a new egg on February 14th.. a LOCAL one! Met the breeder in Lampasas and picked it up in person..
I'm calling it egg "F" and it weighed in at 549 grams
* ~ Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ ~ *
I picked up 3 new local eggs today (March 15th) from Killeen. They were freebies and a little unusual.. The woman who gave them to me has had them a week.. they were given to her.. so not sure just when they were laid or what all they may have been through.. fertility is unknown but the weights seem to be ok for the egg size.. the coloring is a bit off on 2 of them.. so I will really need to watch their weight loss like a hawk

Yes G-1 is as speckled as it looks.. weighs in at a hefty 683 grams

G-2 is more of the "normal" looking egg.. weighed in at 531 grams and is the smallest of the bunch

G-3 is extremely speckled.. I expect it will have issues and I may need to paint the egg with non toxic paint or a wax coating to help keep in moisture... I'll be monitoring it closely .. it weighed in at 639 grams

all 3 new eggs together:

I picked up 3 more eggs from Killeen today.. they are not related to the "G" eggs

H-1 576 grams
