Breed Information, Comments, and Experience with breed:

The breed is an American breed having been bred for a white egg laying, dual purpose breed. Originally, light-weight stock from imported from Holland was bred with a Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire, White Leghorn and Lamona. By careful selection, the White Holland was created. At the same time this White Holland was being created, breeders crossed the Holland stock with Barred Plymouth Rocks, Black Australorps, Brown Leghorns and White Leghorns and created the Barred Holland. The breed is calm, hardy, great layers and good foragers. The Holland, while not being a popular breed, is a great choice for the small rural flock even though they are slow to moderate maturing birds. While the Holland is cold hardy, their single combs sometimes suffer frostbite in extreme winter conditions. The Holland is currently on the critical list and is an overlooked diamond in the rough. It is one of the best, if not the best, dual purpose white egg layer that is adaptable to almost any surroundings. According to the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, the White Holland "may well be extinct now", and the Barred Holland "is likely the rarest, living breed of American chicken".
