Our little flock started with a trip to D&L with the intention of just 'looking'. Half an hour later we were leaving with a box of baby chicks randomly selected on how adorable the chick looked and all the recommended supplies to raise them. For the first month they spent their lives in a little box in our bedroom to make sure they were kept warm with their heat lamp. We quickly realized that we defiantly needed a new enclosure when we came home and found one of them perched on a model car. So thus began the rush to prepare a coop and a run and make sure the dogs wouldn't be able to make them a tasty snack. My husband and I have learned a lot about chickens since this adventure began. They are now laying beautiful eggs and have stopped picking on the two ducklings we added later on.
Bug is the Silver Laced Wyandotte and she was named for her huge eyes she had as a chick. From the pecking order that ive watched im pretty sure shes the head hen.
Buttercup is the Golden Laced Wyandott, she has the most beautiful patterns just like Bug.
Lola is the Ameraucana, when we purchased her and her flock mates we had no idea about the breed and when we went outside to check on them one morning a beautiful sky blue egg was laying in the coop. We had no clue we even had an easter egger hen.
Sassy is the Black Sex Linked. I chose her because she was the most frail and tiny chick in the bunch but after we brought her home we discovered she simply had no fear. If you tried to reach in the brooding box to get the water container this little bugger was right there pecking your fingers to death. Even grown she has no fear of my husband and I and will come up and peck our shoes if we dont get the feed out quickly enough
Then there is Winston. Winston is our gorgeous Blue Orpington rooster. I had no idea what was going on when my husband pulled up to my work and waved me out. In the passenger seat of his truck in a carrier was the most handsome rooster ive ever seen. Turns out Winston like to crow all day, the entire day. And that would be why our friend willingly gave him to us for free. Now that we've put him in with the girls hes calmed down and doesn't make quite so much ruckus but we have to watch our backs when were out collecting eggs. Those are his babies and he doesn't like to share.
Sunshine and Daisy are the product of sending my husband to the feed store to get chicken feed and coming home with a Pekin and a Mallard duckling. Bug didn't care for the new arrivals and was being quite a nuisance towards them. Sunshine quickly grew to be much bigger than Bug and expressed that she did not care for the pecking. Now we've got the whole group situated with Winston in the lead and making sure the girls don't get to wild.

This has been one heck of a leaning adventure and the pride that we feel from going out each morning and collecting those eggs is amazing. I couldn't be happier that we decided to stop by that little feed store and 'look' around.
