We had been wanting chickens for a long time. We decided on 6 buff orpingtons, and we took in the last easter egger at our feed store. It ended up being a rooster! We ordered a coop online- big mistake. The coop they advertised as being able to house 6-10 hens was barely big enough for two:( We used it in our garage as a brooder. We decided we HAD to build and I started pouring over coop pics on backyard chickens and the wichita was my favorite. I ordered the plans and my husband knocked this out in a few weeks. The total cost for the coop was around $1000. My husband is an engineer, so he kind of winged it on his own. We expanded the coop to 14x6. The henhouse is 4x6. There is plenty of room for our 7 birds. We used sand, pea gravel and sweet pdz in the run, and we use pine shavings mixed with some sweet pdz in the coop. The windows are cheap $30 home depot windows. They open from the inside which is a pain:( I originally got old pane windows, but my husband wanted ones that actually opened and weren’t prone to breaking. The ONLY part that is not predator proof at this point is the outside window- we need to put hardware cloth OVER the screen. We also need to paint the top where the ventilation holes are. Our chickens love their new coop and so do our neighbors;) Please post any questions you have and we can answer them for you!
