The Pink Place

The Pink Place

I've really needed to build a new coop lately, since we've acquired more hens and it got quite cold for a little while (I know they are fine out there but I just feel bad idunno.gif), and then lastly, the coop we have now is extremely hard to collect eggs from, unnecessarily hard, actually, and I wanted something that was easier to collect from, easier to clean, and easier on the eye big_smile.png

I found all sorts of different coops that I could buy online that were beautiful and functional but very expensive :/  So my husband, being the Eagle Scout that he is, said, "Just get me some blueprints and I will build you whatever you want!".  I couldn't say no to that, so I started looking online for ideas, and came across all the OUTSTANDING and beautiful coop ideas that all of you lovely people have happily poured so much time and energy into.  I was so excited!

I finally found my favorite:  designed and built by member whillo

I especially loved the hearts big_smile.png

I can never say no to any extra girlyness!

So I showed it to my husband, but unfortunately, he wasn't as gung-ho about it as I was!

So I decided to take matters into my own hands!

Even though I know nothing about building or construction or tools in general yippiechickie.gif

I've been working on it for about a week now, and so far I am kind of close to being done.  I have actually done EVERYTHING by myself!  Once my husband taught me how to use a drill and work the circular saw, I was just workin' away!

I even got the supplies at Lowe's by myself!

I never would have thought I could do this, never, never, never, not in a million years.

That being said, there are OBVIOUSLY lots of things wrong with it (imperfect corners, lines that aren't straight, things I would have done differently if I had had the slightest clue) BUT nevertheless, I am so proud of it and can't wait to get the girls in there :)

Things that still need to be done are: framing for the roof

shingling the roof and nesting boxes

building their ramp

putting in the hardware cloth

put the door in

cutting out the hearts :)

and finishing the painting.

I also got some amethyst crystal cabinet knobs, since the pink wasn't girly enough :):)

(excuse my mess, building gets messy when you are disorganized and have no clue what you're doing!)

I will be sure to update as I am getting ready to finish!  I do hope to have it completed by next week sometime.
Thank you whillo for your awesome coop design and inspiration!

p.s. the color is called "Cotton Candy"yesss.gif

Update: January 19, 2012

So, We've gotten a few things done.

Most importantly, we have cut out the hearts :)

We put the front door on.

We added the plywood lid and shingles to the nesting box.

Finished painting most of the trim.

We got the a-frames in place on the roof (only 4, I wish it was five.)

We put the plywood roofing on.

(Please excuse the HUGE mess I have made)

(Below)  Not happy about this huge gap/hole in the roofing AT ALL.  I guess that's what happens when you get people that don't really care about the project to help you put roofing on idunno.gif  I mean, there should be a frame there first of all, but definitely a triangle piece of plywood to close that up.  Or else what's the point of even creating the little house??  I mean I know I am a "dumb young girl" but I am pretty sure I am right on this one!!  I'm gonna have to fix that before we are finished.

Still left to do:

Add shingles and drip edge to the roof. (I honestly have no idea what drip edge is, my stepdad just told me I really needed it lol)

Cut out, paint, and attach chicken door and ladder

A second coat of pink on the back panel

Painting the top plywood triangles white

Adding the roosts

I have not yet added a separator to the nesting box, and am wondering if it is really necessary?

Lastly, add hardware cloth.

I have the perfect place for it in the yard :)

I preordered a couple of climbing Queen Elizabeth rose plants to line the sides love.gif

I can't wait!!

Now, just to figure out how to move it out of the garage fl.gif
