80% of my chickens died overnight!!  ...what happened?

Last night we had a rain storm blow through and most of my Freedom Rangers died!  They were in a chicken tractor that is 75% covered top and sides... they did not flood but it looked like a hand granade exploded in the cage as there were piles of chickens and individual chickens all over the cage...not to mention that the brothers in arms left alive seemed shell shocked.

Any ideas what caused that and how I prevent it from happening again?
