Keeping your chickens safe from predators

Predators are one of the greatest fears a chicken farmer has. They can be cunning, fast, and very sneaky. The list of predators ranges from the smallest mink to the biggest bear. You will have different types of predators depending on where you live. Minks and raccoons are some of the hardest predators to fight off because they can run away or climb a tree before you have time to react. But don't get this wrong, it is quite possible to keep your chickens safe if you know what you are up against!   Birds of prey It is hard to defend against birds of prey. They... read more

Family, Children & Chickens

How do I begin? I can tell you that I never thought I would own a chicken, besides the one in my freezer. I never liked the idea of keeping birds of any type. I was a cat girl growing up. Adopted two dogs with my boyfriend who later became my husband. Fast forward a few years and some of the things in my life have changed. I have a son who was diagnosed with speech dyspraxia and started to attend a school for children with special needs. He was only three years old and half of the people in our lives had something for me to try to help him or advise. At the end of the... read more

5 Things I've learned from my Rooster

5 Things I’ve learned from My Rooster All record of the year 2012 should be wiped off the charts…or it would if it were me. This year was just …horrible. My sons went off to college…leaving me an empty nester, my husband filed for div...orce and I lost my job….all within 6 months. I was left empty…utterly defeated and very scared. How would I survive? Eat? Live? I managed to crawl out of my misery hole and find an apartment to live in. I managed to pay the rent by working two part-time jobs until I could find a wonderful position that I absolutely love.... read more

Pollaio di Eden

We are brand new to chicken keeping. So new that we are not even "keeping chickens" yet.  Our chicken coop name will be 'Pollaio di Eden' which is Italian for Eden's Chicken Coop. My husband is Italian and we embrace it at every chance! I've been doing so much research lately on chickens that it's all I talk about. I've already chosen the spot for my coop, and will soon start to build it!      Below is the location we have chosen on our 2.43 acre property. We will place our chickens in the right corner between the trees. I have debated about where to place them... read more

Free Range vs Chicken Run - Or Is There A Better Way?

  • by escape

At some point, every chicken owner will have to make a decision to either free range their chickens or use a coop with a chicken run attached. Both options have some advantages and some disadvantages.   The advantages of keeping your chickens in a coop with a run attached include:   Chickens kept in coops with a run attached are easier to keep safe from predators. Chicken runs can be basic with wires strung across the top to discourage flying predators like hawks or they can be elaborate with a complete wire roof that is high enough for you to comfortably... read more

Five years have passed now since the rain's initial return and the land's miraculous restoration. Nearly all the native horses have been out-done and overrun by the newcomers, with only one small family band still clinging to existence, but the cycle is about to change again. The unnatural do not survive here; Mother Nature has ways of dealing with all who oppose her. Only when everything is kept in balance does the land renew itself as it should. The steady influx of horses over the past few years is waning, and though the equine population is slowly... read more
