So you want to rescue a chicken... Now what?

I Have Done Something…..   I looked at all the caged animals in the barn...the cast-offs of human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness, and betrayal. And I was angry. "God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?" God was silent for a moment, and then He spoke softly, "I have done something," he replied.     "I created you."                                                                                           -- Author Unknown     "Saving the life of one animal may not change the... read more

Letting Broody Hens Hatch and Raise Chicks

At first I thought raising chickens would be easy-peesy.You know - buying a coop, feeding, watering, collection eggs... it didn't seem that hard. But my thoughts changed when my first 6 new arrivals hatched! It was on a sunny Autumn day that I went to feed and let out my flock of bantam hens. 101 Reasons You're Happy To Have BYC!

Hello, and welcome to 101 Reasons You're Happy To Have BYC!     I started this project as a thread, but when I was no longer able to edit the front page to add reasons, I decided to restart it. I am now putting the project in an article form so that I (and you, too!) can always edit it!   The rules are quit simple. Just edit the article and add 2-3, 4 at the most, reasons why you are happy to have BYC. I have numbered them for you.   The opportunity to make new friends is very big, and there are a lot of great people on this site, that you will,... read more

Coops de Nova

In the last two years of chicken keeping, I have had to expand and build more coops. Any one who has chickens as a hobby as well as for good food and eggs, know's how quickly addicting it can become. I have had some temp coops that would shock some people, as well as some flubs that have left me devasted when predation happens. I have decided to put the different coops that I have built here. Only one coop is made of new materials. The rest have been made from scraps and new materials. Mostly though, I just had fun building them and learning and rethinking along the... read more

Free Range vs Chicken Run

Have you restlessly argued to yourself about whats best for your hens? Many people love having chickens ( I know I do ), but many people also live in the city. Most city hens have a small backyard, or a patch of lawn to keep themselves busy. Others may have a larger or smaller property. There are various ways to raising chickens, but in a restricted area can be dificult. What is the main thing you want for your chickens? For them to be happy, healthy, or safe? Free ranging chickens in the city can be dangerous, as there are many predators: traffic, roaming cats or dogs,... read more
