Through Blood Sweat and Tears: The Chicken Momma blog

Hello and thank you for looking! Here is my blog!    I plan to  every day add stories and tips and jokes about my chickens!    So here is the start of my Chicken Story:   It was a warm and sunny day. Actully, it was rather cloudy. But still warm. We drove the few miles on the highway, and then off onto a side road. Then a smaller side road, and then a driveway. Farmer Johns driveway. Well, we pull up and see a nice house:The house of a farmer. Me and my family ride around to the chicken houses, where the good farmer told us to meet him. And then pulls up a... read more

Wow, we love seeing all the homemade coops on this site -but, we opted to buy one already made. Just didn't have the time, or patience to make one. Also, we wanted a "good quality" coop that would last through the ages. So, thankfully we bought one made by the Amish(or Mennonite society -not sure which) community. We were so impressed by the attention to detail and craftsmanship! For $900 (or so) dollars total we were able to get extras like windows, a run, tin roof(or tile if desired) in any paint color -or stain for the same price! (we added the flower boxes)... read more

Diagnosing Incubation Problems and Hatch Failures- My incubator and me.

Diagnosing Incubation Problems and Hatch Failures- My incubator and me. -          A guide for first time incubator Hatchers.                   Hatching eggs I have found takes a lot more time, skill and patience than I thought. Please understand me when reading this article that my incubator and I are the best of friends, it is a vital tool that helps me to breed and nourish my rapidly expanding poultry invasion! There was a time however when we didn’t get along so well together and with good reason too as outlined below. This was a frustrating time which... read more

The Bamboo Peacock

I have been into peafowl for a few years now. I only raise peafowl and have about 11 of them right now. When I got started with peafowl, I also got into gardening because not only did I want to have nice looking birds, but I wanted to create a nice looking place for them. I am calling my bird business "The Bamboo Peacock" after my love of bamboo and peacocks.   I highly recommend clumping bamboo for bird aviaries as the birds don't eat it up and it provides great shade and the leaves the bamboo sheds are great for the birds to scratch around in.   I will update... read more

So you want to rescue a chicken... Now what?

I Have Done Something…..   I looked at all the caged animals in the barn...the cast-offs of human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness, and betrayal. And I was angry. "God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?" God was silent for a moment, and then He spoke softly, "I have done something," he replied.     "I created you."                                                                                           -- Author Unknown     "Saving the life of one animal may not change the... read more

Letting Broody Hens Hatch and Raise Chicks

At first I thought raising chickens would be easy-peesy.You know - buying a coop, feeding, watering, collection eggs... it didn't seem that hard. But my thoughts changed when my first 6 new arrivals hatched! It was on a sunny Autumn day that I went to feed and let out my flock of bantam hens. Counting them off as they went, I noticed one was forcing herself to stay in the nesting box. I cautiously lifted her from the nest, horrified to see 6 chicks fall out from under neath. I quickly packed them into the nesting box and placed back the hen. This was the first hatch... read more
