My wife thinks I've "flown the coop"

But in all reality she supports my new found hobby farming.  She supports my mini-farm hobbies a lot better then she did my WoW habits (when I used to play it)    A little back story.    Ever since I was a kid I've always enjoyed animals, farms, gardens, the outdoors.   I moved around a  lot after high school, and enough college to realize it wasn't for me, but enough to get experience and an education to help me get a job.   Worked in the backwoods of Alaska and Montana, even spent a few months in Canada.   I finally settled in the Mountains and rolling... read more

Hello every one!

Hi all, Hope you enjoy reading!     We first got our chickens about 2 or 3 years ago.   We got them as chicks from the markets. They are a type of Sex link or could be Red Stars.  We started out having 4 chickens, that was reduced, sadly, but we got more.  Today we only have four chickens, but they are still good pets and very amusing.      Here are some pictures:                     Louise, (the chicken with reddish brown feathers)  sadly passed away around Decemberl.  We think she was egg bound, but we couldn't be... read more

Our Chicken Journey

These are our first chicks. We picked them up from a breeder in Rutledge, GA.  We had 3 Buff Orpingtons, 1 Cuckoo Maran, 1 White Silkie and 1 Blue Silkie and a Buff Laced Polish we all loved named Cheddar.  They were all 1 week old when we got them except Cheddar who was just hatched.  I drove an hour and a half to find 2 White Leghorns (supposedly pullets) and a Frizzle named Nacho Cheese (my son likes cheese names apparently). The Frizzle didn't make it to bedtime and the Polish was smothered at about 2 weeks old while we were at church.  The other chickens... read more

Why we decided to add chickens to our life.

Nobody really understands why a person would bother to have chickens unless you have had them. After all they are smelly, require feed, 50 pounds at a time, and make you look like a country bumpkin. I decided that it would be a good hobby for my grandchildren and me to share. They would learn about responsibility, what a chicken really is, where eggs really come from, and what America is really supposed to be like. This is what I told myself as we looked through the catalogs deciding which chicks we would order. We picked the prettiest ones who were described to be... read more

Chickenpooplady's Random chicken stuff

My Flock   Last December my uncle moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio and decided to start a farm. The first thing that he did was buy 68 chicks from Mount Healthy Hatchery. However, he did not have the land for the chickens so I raised them for him in my garage and  then garden. They provided an amazing amount of compost and our garden has never been better. Five months later the pullets were ready to go out to the farm. As a thank you for raising the flock my uncle let me keep my four favorite girls. We picked out two barred rocks and two buff... read more
