Dutch Hollow Hoop Coop

  • by lklik

Summary: 8'x8' ft footprint and over 6' tall! Large, light weight, easy to move with 1 person and about $200 to build!         Getting our first chickens meant building our first coop!  I wanted a tractor format but something I could walk into and stand up in.  At 6'2" I don't bend over easily and my height meant BIG coop for only 6 chickens.   I found an idea of a Hoop Coop shared by Rain Creek Pottery that I liked and looked like it would suit my needs perfectly.  This hoop coop tractor design would allow my birds the comfort of a large enclosure... read more

future coop design

I have recently discovered SketchUp by google so I designed a chicken coop that I am going to begin building in a few weeks. I have all the materials that I will need to complete this build including the porta hut that I will use as the roof. I am planning on getting 15 brown sex-link pullets and one or two brown sex-link roosters to live in the coop once I get it built.         I have two dog runs that I am using as the run for chickens. The panels are 10'X7'.             This is a picture of the underside of coop and how I am going... read more

Simple Chicken Coop

Describe 'Simple Chicken Coop' here I was going along fine and somehow I lost all I had down so will try again.(lack of computer skills)     Simple chicken coop made mostly of re purposed material. Basic footprint is 4x6x8 but the floor is 4x6. Good for 6 to10 hens. Beginning ground up it sets on treated 4x6x8 runners beveled at the ends for ease of moving. the floor is 10 inches above ground level and made of used "trex" material a friend gave me. Back wall is 4 feet high and front is 5 feet high. Nest boxes are... read more

Old School Sky Light

  • by Wocdam

Very simple design based off an old barn. The building's elevated window faces the east so that the earliest rays from the sun fill the coop. Depending on how many birds you would like to keep,  this coop can be made very small or very big. The loftiness inside also lends itself to quality venting which is so important in any coop construction.     I built this coop using old, weathered, and recycled materials so that it would appear to be much older. I chose a typical barn red and added some fun chicken décor. My coop is next to my small pond... read more

mobile brooder

My son and I built this mobile brooder this past weekend.  All it needs now is a good coat of paint to seal the wood so the weather doesnt take its toll on it.  We wanted to have more brooder space and the ability to brood outdoors so we decided to build our brooder portable.     The brooder floor is made of 1/2 by 1/2 inch wire and is 14 inches off the ground.  the distance from the ground to the floor made it too easy for draft and predators to come in from underneath so we ran the plywood sides down past the floor to about 2 inches off the ground to keep... read more

You couldn't hit (the side of the barn) Coop

Describe 'You couldn't hit (the side of the barn) Coop' here We just began our experience of chickens about the end of February.  My husband came home from the feed store with four little tiny chicks born February 8th.  We looked at many designed and were a little overwhelmed by the complex designs.  It was when we saw that everyone does what works for their particular situation, we relaxed and my husband began creating.     We began our coop in a corner of the fenced in portion of our yard behind the fish ponds.  We used our plastic shed as... read more

The Mountaineer

Credit goes to the Taj Mahal for most of the design concept. With most of the credit going to my dad and husband doing most of the work!   I tried to take all the ideas that I like to make my Frankenstein coop. The ideas I had my heart set on were the clear roofing, more nesting boxes, using milk crates, the chicken nipple water, wooden floor, and having access to the door inside and nesting boxes without having to go into the coop.   I made my coop 12' by 6' since I have 11 pullets (well hopefully they are all pullets) that should get pretty... read more

Pallet Paradise in the Making

With the help of a couple of friends and the finding of free pallets we are on our way to a very inexpensive but well built coop. This coop just withstood 60-70 mph blizzard winds here in Colorado Springs. I will post the final picture when we complete hopefully this weekend.       Got about 20 free pallets           My daughter even came to help.       Friends come over to help.               Without this friend I could not have attempted this task.     Ready for... read more

The "Girl's Club" coop

Describe 'The "Girl's Club" coop ' here This is the 2nd time I have tried my hand at raising chickens.  The first time was about 20 years ago when my kids were young.  My DH and I  put together a shed and put chicken wire around an area for the run.  It was messy and over-sized. This time around, I was determined to do a better job.  So, after much research and recruiting building help from a close friend, we came up with the following.  Since I don't want any Roosters, I thought an appropriate coop name would be "Girl's Club".  I plan on making a sign, but haven't... read more
