Our Coops

Our Old Coops. We built our coops long before we ever heard about BYC. Sorry we don't have any pics to show phase by phase of the process. We started with 1 small coop attached to the side of our building. It was 36" x 30" x 30". My son Logan was 6 and my brother-in-law talked us into going to a chicken show. Logan finally talked me into getting a pair of Bantam BB Reds for $10.00. That was in 2005. There was an old deck close to our house so we dismantled it for the lumber and built the house. I'll never do that again, it was so heavy we had to leave it when we... read more

The Triple C - The Crouches Chicken Coop

The Triple C (The Crouches Chicken Coop)   Hi everyone, I decided to post some pictures of our adventure building our coop. It's been a trying experience, but a rewarding one. The structure is an 8'x12' with the coop part being a 4'x8'.  We have 8 Plymouth Barred Rocks, and I can't wait till we get the coop done so we can put our girls out in their new home. Here goes: Dug out 8'x12' area to put treated 4'x4's as framing:         Notice our supervisor, lol....that's Butterball our 16 yr old cat.     Next we decided to put a full hardware cloth... read more

My First Coop

My thrifty, Cozy, Coop To give some background first, I've never raised chickens and I never built anything of this magnitude by my self.  I'm handy with my hands but nothing could have prepared me for the year long project I was going to start with this coop. I decided to go into chickens because my grand mother had chickens all while i was just a kid.  I wasn't really close with her but it was one of the things that really fascinated me when we came up to visit, and it was the first thing you saw driving in the yard.  She always had leghorns. What also prompted me... read more

Bucs Bator Build

  • by dwdoc

WELCOME MY INCUBATOR PAGE When I set out to have a backyard flock I wanted to do it a cheaply as possible.  This meant using recycled materials for the coop where I could.  I used the same concept when building an incubator. So, I started by doing a ton of reading here on BYC and other sites on the web.  Once I understood the basic concept of incubating and the purpose of an incubator I set out searching the house and shed to see if I had the materials laying around. Here is what I was able to find: An old cooler ($0.00) Chicken wire ($0.00) An extra... read more

Dwdoc's Chicken Coop

  • by dwdoc

Hello and welcome to my BYC page. Here’s my story: I grew up as a military brat and lived in base housing most my life as a child.  I then spent a career in the service and again lived either on base or in apartments.   I got out of the service, started a private investigations company, bought a house, etc…   About three years ago my step son came home with some eggs he got from a local farm.  I thought it was pretty cool and the eggs were great.  So, that planted the chicken seed. In early December, 2010, we visited a horse barn in the Ocala area and the lady there... read more

Vfem's Chickens Go Green 2008 - Chicken Coop

Chickens Go Green 2008 To read more about this green coop and join the discussion click here: http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=90535 In June of 2008 I made a joke that our new house was so far out in the country I needed to get chickens to fit in! My husband laughed, and I realized this was more of a challenge then a joke. I decided if I dragged out the joke, you know, bought some chicken pillows, showed him some research I did on chickens on the net, then perhaps I'd really freak him out! The best laugh EVER! Only...... I found a breed finder,... read more

Jimwwhite's Chicken Coop

Hi, my name is Jim and my wife Teresa and I live just to the east of Statesville, North Carolina.  We have a very secluded three acre piece of property that is surrounded by hundreds of other acres of pasture land that will probably not be developed in the foreseeable future.  We share out home with Charlie our three year old dachshund-terrier mix, Matilda our long tailed, longhaired cat, and twenty-nine Gold Comet pullets.  And on the weekends you’ll probably find one or both of our ten and five year old granddaughters staying over.   We’re a half mile down a one lane... read more

Coop Design

The Epic Chicken Coop!   ** Updated 2/27/2011 - see updated pics at the bottom. **   I believe it's time. Time to capture the epic adventure that is .... the Chicken Coop.Really, I don't know what the hell we were thinking.  It went something like this.  "Hey, let's expand our chicken operation."  "Yeah! We could build a 10x12 building from scratch!"Uh, yeah.  So we did.  It took forever.  It cost a decent amount of money. We did it during the hottest summer in a bajillion years, and it was hot as hell. It generated more than one argument. It required many, many... read more

Camilles Homade Incubator

Camille's Incubator by Camille's Dad      We wanted to get the full experience of raising chickens so hatching eggs to perpetuate the flock seemed like a fun project. I wanted to see if I could come up with a working 'bator without spending any money. I was victorious in my pursuit. The hardest thing to scrounge was the t-stat. I probably spent more time than it was worth getting it as they cost about $8.        I started by cutting a rectangular hole in the lid of the cooler for the window. Notice it is not centered in the lid but shoved over to the right... read more

my-first-chicks

These are my daughter's first chicks.  They are 4 weeks old and she is 6 years old. There are 10 BOs, 9 RIRs and 5 Silver Wyndottes.  The coop is not complete, I well be adding several windows and nest boxes.  The run is also not complete, but I hope to have it completed by next week so they can venture outside.  As I have stated in other posts, I am going to have to thin the flock as soon as I find out how many roos I have.                         01/14/11      01/14/11     New Chicks 02/25/11  Barred Rocks, Buff Rocks, Gold... read more
