Building the Layers Coop

Building the Layers Coop: I didn't get photos of the framing, but here we go from there: Size is 12' x 16'. Door is 4' x 8'.  Windows recycled (3).   I painted inside and out with Valspar brand (oil glossy) porch paint.  ... Here are more recent pictures. Still lots to do. The roof is going to be bent down on front, and then a large wide cap over it. Need hardware cloth on the top side ends, the chicken wire will not be enough, then some type of covering for rain. See the make shift (temporary) yard for play. I love the dutch door.    ... read more

Coops And Construction

My ghetto coops.....   *Note: links to my breeder barn and layers coop pages are here: Layers coop Breeder Barn Pens Nellabean Brooders - Broody coop   Now these aren't the prettiest, but they are functional! First is "The Red Coop." It is 6x8. I built this entirely myself (except for the metal roof), from salvaged lumber. There is ventilation on 3 sides at the top. This is before painting ....   Pop door (closed here) and ramp, and upper vent.   This is it after painting: This is where it sets, beside the 30' x 13' breeder barn. It... read more

Edfam4's Chicken Coop

Here we go!!! We have been wanting to raise chickens for a while now and we have finally committed to it. We are so new to this that we aren't even eggs yet. We have done our own research, talking to friends, surfing the net, as well as talking to people on here. And we feel we are ready to take our next step. We have designed our coop and run using MS Paint and would like any input(good or bad) that anyone would like to share. The coop itself is 6 ft wide, 18 ft long, 8 ft tall, and 2 ft off the ground. The pen is 20 ft deep, 30 ft long, and from 10 ft at the coop to 8... read more

Breeder Barn Pens

************************************************** ************************************************** While contemplating building another coop, I looked over at the, "boat shed." It is 33 ft long, and 13 ft wide. I was imagining the possibilities. My dear husband agreed to let me use the building. It does have electricity, but no running water.  The plan:  8 breeder pens, each one about 8' x 5' with a 3' center isle, using mostly salvaged materials.  I got the front closed in, and buried hardware cloth all along the bottom of this side. Then I added a big ol barn... read more

Dvto2's Chicken Coop

  • by DVTO2

I began my coop by reading chickens for dummies and then asking questions on the forum.  I am looking for about 40 eggs per week and have acquired 7 Golden Comets - I figured I needed about 4 square feet of coop space and 70 square feet of run.  I came up with designs for a 4 x 8 coop and 5 x 16 foot run.  I have a big yard and wanted to build a tractor and had an old garden cart that I put the coop on.  The cart was only 3 by 4, so I had to extend out a foundation on top of the cart.  The walls are 4 feet high plus a gabled ceiling of another 12 inches.   The ceiling is... read more

Bobby Joe's Small Coop Page

This is my second coop I turned a shed into a coop and this is the one I built from scratch. The coop is 5'x5'x6' tall it is made from shippng boxes 2 and pine wood pallets. All materials were free except the screws, less than $7 for them.First I built the frame from the shipping boxes and runners from the pallets . I then covered that in the 6" wide boards form the pallets. It took 1 day to break down the pallets and the boxes and 1 day to reassemble. The shingles and hinges all were from things I had around home. As you can see It has a hinged top for cleaning and egg... read more

Montanasandy's Chicken Coop

Wildflowers and Chicken Coops!   Please feel free to message me for more details!         We live in Potomac, Montana with our horses, dogs and cats.  We are newbies to the chicken world.  On April 24, 2010 we got our 4 EE's.   We thought we would buy a coop, but after pricing them at our local farm store ($$$!!!!) we decided to build it ourselves.  My 83 year old dad is a retired engineer, so he really help out so much with the design and figuring out the snow load for the roof, etc... We broke ground and set the posts on May 9, 2010  The... read more

My Poultry Farm

2011-01-09                            This is my page dedicated to the chickens i own. My chickens aren't show quality, or as fancy as some others on the site. However, i don't mind that because they are healthy and provide enjoyment and eggs, which is the main reason for having them.                      AROUND   MY CHICKEN COOP: -----------------------------------------------------------                                          My Coop isn't fancy, however, it is functional and provides a level of safety, and living space for the chickens that live there.... read more

Kippenhouse's Chicken Coop

Garden Roof Chicken Coop My husband 'thought out loud' that maybe we should get chickens.  I quickly realized that would mean I would get to build a cool chicken coop and I was in!  The chicken coop design quickly turned into an obsession. Here were my goals; -I wanted to build it once, so going too cheap on materials just to have it rot was not an option. -It had to look good and be something I was proud of and NOT something that I wanted to hide from my neighbors. -Due to the investment I wanted it to 'give back' besides providing shelter for my... read more
