Happy Morrows' Chicken Page   The ladies arrived on March 29th!         We were thirsty girls!          Working the camera.     We started out with 33 from Murray McMurray but 19 went home with the folks who ordered with me when they were a week old. Now we have mine: 4 Buff Orpingtons, 3 Easter Eggers, 2 Barred Rocks, and one mystery chick!  And my brother's until they are older: 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes, 1 Easter Egger, and a Dark Cornish.  That's 14 chicks to keep me busy!       Working on the Coop!  Thanks to everyone who helped put up stud... read more

Pemberley At The Little Red Farmhouse - My3jsons's Chicken Coop

Welcome to Pemberley at the Little Red Farmhouse!     Yeah, I know it's not Jane Austen's Pemberley but for a chicken house we think it is pretty grand! And besides Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth & Jane live there.   This is our coop story: Our chicken house is 16' x 4' and 2' off the ground.  My sweet husband designed it to match our new farmhouse and we built it at his shop which means, yes, it had to be moved.  It has two chicken doors in the front and a large access door to get to the nest boxes and a small storage area.  On the back are 4 access doors... read more

My Coop Page

Red White and Blue the Coop This project started with spending the entire winter drawing numerous rough prints and incorporating ideas from BYC members along the way. Thanks to all of you for your help.  Getting started to prevent anything digging into the run I laid out the footprint of the coop and run.On the left the pressure treated 4x4 is setting on some salvaged galvanized roof material between the coop and deck on the right it is setting on vinyl siding which later will be replaced with steel roof material and in front it sets on vinyl siding. I will add to... read more

Blue Cube Chicken Coop

Here is the page dedicated to our building of the Blue Cube Chicken Coop. We haven't thought of a final name yet, so we're just giving it a literal one for now. Here is the final product. After several weeks of research, comparing prices and ideas, reading chicken books, reading the BYC forum, planning and designing, we came up with the simple shed design, an 8 x 8 x 8 shed, with a real shingled roof on top, with 3 sides made up of nice windows which we recycled. We did our best to combine the usage of new lumber with old scrap lumber and recycled materials wherever... read more

Eileenb's Chicken Coop

My coop is 4' x 4', and is sized for 3 - 4 chickens. Since we were planning on building most of the coop in the garage and then assembling onsite, we decided to make this as modular as possible.    We used a sandwich construction method to try to insulate this as much as possible, with 1/2" exterior plywood and 1" foam insulation board, and then lined the inside of each piece with 1/4" plywood.   All walls, roof, and floor use this sandwich method.   We painted the insides with heavy duty primer, and stained the outside with a latex exterior stain. When we did the... read more

Eggclucktic Acres's Chicken Coop

Eggclucktic Acres Chicken Castle Almost every chicken coop begins with a story. Ours started when we went over to an old friend's house in the summer of 2009. The sounds of hens filled the air and my wife rushed to the friend's coop with glee.  "We can do this!" she said. We sampled a dozen eggs from my friend's flock and the planning and research went from there. We scoured many ideas on BYC but they had to fit in our skill set. I had not built anything in my life so I started at square one with knowledge and buying tools. For construction knowledge I bought Carpentry... read more

The Chicken Ranch

  • by Hookem

The Chicken Ranch Diana, Texas This is my first attempt at a chicken coop! With the help of my wife, uncle and a friend we built this coop in about 3 to 4 weekends.  We used tin from an old hardware store built in the 1920's. The "nesting buckets" were my wife's idea and so my uncle built the shelves for the buckets with a small roof over them that swivels up for easier cleaning of the buckets. We put linoleum down on the floors for easier cleaning. We draped the run in baseball netting and used a 12 ft. 4x4 post in the center. The bottom part of the run is... read more

Adventurefamily5's Chicken Coop

We just finished our coop.  I have more details on my website under backyard chickens.  The site is www.adventurefamily5.wordpress.com   The whole chicken ownership thing in the suburbs is a really huge debate.  Here in Raleigh, backyard chickens are a hit.  There is even a Tour De Coop each year that showcases coops in the city.  Each month, you can find a class on keeping backyard chickens someplace in the city.  We joined the meetup group to get to know others, and get information on where to get supplies like organic chicken feed and food grade diatomaceous earth.... read more

Gregc_Backyardchickens's Chicken Coop

The girls discovered snow today and decided not to venture far from the coop. Our story in brief: I was sitting in the backyard one morning last spring, sipping coffee and gazing at the few green shoots of grass then visible  when my son's abandoned wooden swing set caught my eye.  I looked at the  4x4x8 ft wooden play tower and thought to myself. "Now there's a perfect frame for a chicken coop".   I never drew up any detailed plans, just stripped down the play tower and reused the wood along with some scrap wood from some old basement shelves and a bit of new wood... read more
