The "Girl's Club" coop

Describe 'The "Girl's Club" coop ' here This is the 2nd time I have tried my hand at raising chickens.  The first time was about 20 years ago when my kids were young.  My DH and I  put together a shed and put chicken wire around an area for the run.  It was messy and over-sized. This time around, I was determined to do a better job.  So, after much research and recruiting building help from a close friend, we came up with the following.  Since I don't want any Roosters, I thought an appropriate coop name would be "Girl's Club".  I plan on making a sign, but haven't... read more

Chicken Coop Pagoda

My wife had been wanting chickens for some time.  A few weeks ago she found a local guy selling some chicks on Craigslist and decided to take the plunge.  Luckily we had a huge cardboard box that I cut a large hole in the top of, and used our mesh copper burn bowl cover as a lid for the box.  It worked out great for their temporary housing.     She brought home 9 chicks with the intent on hopefully keeping 6, assuming some would be male...which we would then give those to a good home.   My wife found photos of a few coops that she liked, a couple of which... read more

The Chicken Palace

We decided to build a coop so our son could learn some things about being responsible for animals and learn some basic book keeping along with having fun taking care of chickens. The best part will be the great eggs that we can eat from our very own chickens.   We have built most of this with reclaimed materials. The substructure is all from bins at construction sites, the sheathing is from old shipping crates and the board and batten siding is made of pallet material and plywood cut in strips. The nesting boxes are pails cut in half that we picked... read more

Coop from Reclaimed Wood

My Dad and Husband fashioned this small coop from reclaimed wood. The total project cost was less than $75. This is our first coop for our small flock of 2 Rhode Island Reds and 2 Barred Rocks. I think they like their new home! Here is a link to the build. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/82391 read more

The Eggcelsior

The Eggcelsior is a five cluck establishment built in the wonderful area of Landstown, Texas.     The population of Landstown is currently in flux; however, the proprietors saw fit to encourage travel to their fair town by creating a delightful rendezvous location as the first permanent building in their up and coming town.   First, the foundation was formed:       The builders managed to score free lumber from Craigs List on a deck that was being torn out and about 60' of fencing that had been blown down in a recent wind storm.  This accounted for... read more

Missouri Napoleon (Revolution)

Missouri Napoleon (Revolution) Here's a design for about 10 birds with easy access to the laying boxes for me and to the run as well as outside for the chickens. Tried to take the best of others' designs - originality is dead/why reinvent the wheel? -  and suit them to my needs, wants and budget.   The entire process of building the coop, from design to completed chicken confine, took a few weeks from beginning to end, in between my full time job and a little relaxation, and was an enjoyable experience. The coop is convertible, with a... read more

MoonShadowsFarm

MoonShadows Farm Chicken Coop and Run   Originally from the city, we moved to the suburbs and eventually to the country here in Stroudsburg, PA 18 years ago. We have 16 acres, mostly wooded, and we always talked about raising chickens. Finally, this year, we decided to make it a reality. Sixteen chicks arrived in early April and were placed in our homemade brooder. Next task was to build a coop for them. We poured over the coop designs and coop posts on BYC in addition to buying Chicken Coops for Dummies. Our coop design began to take shape.   The coop is... read more

Build your own Incubator with the STC-1000

A friend asked me how I did this, so I made this tutorial for her.  Not to let the work go to waste, I am posting it here   Ok, so to start, I took an old cooler, the kind with wheels because it was kind of cracking and I've found that when I go to the beach, it's too heavy to carry and it just sinks into the sand anyway, so I sacrificed it for an incubator   This part is much like any other home built incubator.  There are many ways to skin this cat, and you'll want to modify it to what you have available in your home.   You can see here how it was sort of set up... read more
