The Process

Table of Contents The Story The Process The Water System Costs Family Photos     The Process  June 11 --Construction Day 1 Finally, today, with the help of a friend (who has tools) we began construction on the coop.  Wehoo!  It's amazing how many times plans have changed.  Admittedly, it's hard not to get frustrated with the process and my own inabilities and lack of construction know-how.   I'm so very thankful the Lord has blessed me with people who are willing to help me think through the process.  Today, it was Kurt who was my hero.  Reluctantly,... read more

My Coop Build and Run in Photos   It started with the frame.  My youngest likes to help. Floor in.  Now for the walls and nest box. Roof and doors.  A couple of older fledglings! That's the last time he will want to to go in there.    The finished Coop and Run.  Just need to put some windows in. Just checking.  Be a couple of months before my girls start laying, hopefully.    I think my hubby did a lovely job.  Hope you like my pictures.   Husband put the windows in today.  Made a slight mistake.  Had one of the doors the wrong... read more

Missjenny's Chicken Brooder

The Incredible Chick-quarium     View of the Incredible Chick-quarium from my desk. Initially my plan was to "house chicks". I figured a nice big rubbermaid tub would do nicely --  so I took myself to a big box store to buy one. But the biggest tub I found was 50 gallons... fine for 5 wee babies, God forbid they should grow. And God forbid I should actually want to see them growing. So I went back to the drawing board... and started nosing around in my workshop. (I tend to keep scraps.)   The new plan came with some criteria... I wanted to see my chicks and I... read more

Ronikins's Chicken Coop

We live in southern MO near the Arkansas border. My husband and I are pretty new to the chicken world. Our flock consists of 3 rotten cats, a black lab/blue heeler mix (Violet) and 24 buff orpington pullets. MFA lost our cockerels. We're currently looking to buy a BO rooster. On to the coop. This was a sort of arbor when we bought the house. The cement pad was there with the railings on it. Some grapevines were growing on it. It seemed like the best bet for us since we didn't care about keeping the structure. Destruction! Construction! This was the first time that... read more

Louieloui's Chicken Coop

After reading about natural tick eradication using Guineas we decided to purchase 5 Keets from a local family. I read a ton on BYC to come up with coop ideas, poured over designs, but couldn't convince my husband that we could build something. Next I contacted an amazingly talented contractor to inquire about having a coop built for us. Despite his willingness to work within our budget, and his love for both animals and his work, we ultimately decided on buying a shed in case we ever sold the property. Even with the modifications we plan to implement, it should be fairly... read more

Hinkjcpoultry Coops

~Hinkjc Mountain Poultry Coops~ Here's a few pictures of how some of our chickens are housed, we feel they get the best protection from the elements and predators opposed to how some keepers keep their chickens. All coops are closed up tight each and every night. "Housing & runs are the number one priority when considering raising any type of fowl."  All of our coops are equipped with electric in them and have multiple wall outlets for water heaters to be plugged in etc. They also have fluorescent shop lighting installed in them as well, electric timers as used... read more

Suburban Chicken Tractor

Here is my Chicken Tractor.  Took general idea from the "Little Red Hen House" in this book: Chicken Coops: 45 Building Plans for Housing Your Flock by Judy Pangman.  I modified it heavily based on reading this book.  Fresh-Air Poultry Houses: The Classic Guide to Open-Front Chicken Coops for Healthier Poultry by By Prince T. WoodsI recommend both books, (checked them out from Public Library), but especially the Fresh-Air Poultry Houses.  It really reveals what you DON'T need your chicken coop to be.  Anyway, here are a few pics: Coop Framing:  6X6 Base gives us... read more
