Sgtmom52's Chicken Coop

I currently have 3 Buff Orpington, 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte, 3 EE/Spangled Russian Orloff hens, 3 French Black Copper Marans hens and a French Black Copper Marans roo in my older coop.   In 2010 we built a 2nd coop with 2 seperated runs for my bantam cochin roo and his girls, 3 bantam cochins (2 frizzled) a Blue laced red Wyandotte, a light Brahama mix and an EE on one side and a splash Ameraucana roo, 3 Ameraucana hens and 3 Cuckoo Marans/Ameraucana hens on the other.  I also have babies in both runs right now ~ the girls will stay and the boys will have to go. Usseggsurprise's Chicken Coop

Launching the USS EggSurprise Figuring Out What We Needed We had barely started thinking about a coop when the chicks arrived. All seven of them were shipped overnight in a box just bigger than a shoebox, so we figured we had a good long time before they'd be big enough to need a place of their own. Boy, did we underestimate how fast they grow. It took us 3 months to build the coop, and in that time they lived in a plastic storage container for a while, then in a small 3'x3'x3' cube mini-coop that I put together in the basement out of scrap wood. By the time the coop... read more

My Chicken Coop

It's August 4, 2010 and the girls are 7 1/2 weeks old and chomping at the bit to get out of their horse trough! I feel so bad leaving them in there as Hubby works on the coop. The good news is... we're working on the coop! We still have plans to move to the vineyard but we just don't know when at this point. We need to build our own home before the chickens get theirs. So in the meantime, we've decided on a little smaller version of the palace they will have some day. We thought we would make a little Coopalita for them, and then by the time they were full-grown... read more

Kat's Silly Chickens's Chicken Coop

Kat's Silly Chickens We decided to get chickens after Mom saw a white chicken with fluff on it's head on TV. That was August 30th 2010, and 2 weeks later we picked up 6 chicks from Ideal Poultry. 2 Sultans, 2 Partridge Cochins, 2 Barred Rocks. The smallest Sultan passed 4 days later, and I felt bad, so for 3 weeks I worked on convincing Dad to let us get Mom another Sultan. He finally agreed so we looked at the online order again and picked out not only 1 Bantam Sultan, but also a Blue Silkie, a Ginger/Red Silkie, and a Buff Silkie. Our Blue Silkie and our Ginger/Red... read more

Cottage Retreat

Cottage Retreat We took inspiration from 2 coops we saw on BYC; mid-life crisis, and the coop on BYCs' home page.  This is what we came up with. Coop 5'x4'     Run 5'x10'  Cost $1,200.00  3 weeks to build I had a basic idea of what I wanted.  I warned my husband that I was designing on the go, and to expect changes mid stream. We started by digging a 12" deep foot print of the coop and run.  We laid hard cloth using cable-ties to connect the seams, insuring no preditors will be able to get into the coop from below.  We set the footings for the raised coop and... read more

Home For Happy Chickens

I have gotten so many good ideas from you guys I thought I would share the fruits of our labor    What do they always say, Location, Location, Location. Well here is ours. We chose an area that was shaded from the west sun (important here in South Texas), close to the garden and near an area that we are going to make our compost pile area.   We are going to be using mostly recycled, reclaimed, reused, renewed...  (you get the point) materials so we decided to layout the base size from the material we have on hand.   Our first official purchase... read more

coop

Our Coop My wife and I have been interested in keeping chickens for quite some time now.  We happen to live in a city that's friendly toward keeping chickens (Austin, TX) and do not live in an HOA neighborhood.  The only thing holding us back was trying to figure out what we wanted to do for a coop.  We knew that we would want something that was pleasing to the eye.  We knew that we would also need a raised coop that would work well with our sloping backyard.  I appreciate many of the "recycled" coops that I come across, but that just wasn't what we... read more

Chrisnum9's Chicken Coop Tractor

I came up with my chicken tractor/coop design based on some things i had left over from previous projects like the drawer slides for the nesting boxes and the slides for the floor. I designed this coop around the bassis of whatever would make it easiest for us to keep up with the chickens maintenence since we are already rather buisy right now and with a baby on the way. My first step was to build the base or foundation for the coop/tractor. I used pressure treated 4''x4''s for this so it would be nice and sturdy. I half lapped them to make good strong joints. Half... read more
