Fox's Log Cabin Chicken Coop   Greetings from the country! We (me, my wife, our 11 year old Maine Coon cat Olliver, and our six hens Ginger, Marry Ann, Babbs, Edwina, Lucy, and Madge) live on a small 9.25 acre piece of tree covered land in the midlands of South Carolina . Ok finally got pictures of my chicken moat. Hope you enjoy.  We used electrical conduit for the archs. It is stronger than plain pvc. The dimensions of the moat are 50 ft by 30ft by 5 ft. Inside we have 6 planter boxes each measuring 2ft by 16ft. Coop De Ville      After moving to the county and wanting to start raising some of our own eggs and meat I decided we needed a coop.  During the design and construction, the "coop" ended up looking closer to a miniature barn.  This project has ended up taking more time and money then originally intended but I am pleased with the results.  There are still a few things that need to be finished up but I will post what has been done so far.      I have always loved the look of old barns, especially the ones with curved roofs.  I scoured the interned finding all the... read more

Frank's Flock We decided to get backyard chicks a year before we actually started our build.  I grew up on a farm with many animals, but my husband grew up with none.  This has been a duel project for us, however I have to start something, see it, and then do it, while my husband needs to have everything planned before he can start.  Many hours were spent on this site seeing what others had done, what worked and what didn't.  My husband began drawing up plans, I picked a spot, and off we went to the Home Depot. "Chichen Paradise" Coop    Above is the finished coop. Below is the description of how I got there.   1. Google Sketchup I started by researching the different coops on this site and came up with a rough idea of what I wanted. My goal was to make a coop for five chickens with a minimum of 4 feet per bird inside the coop and 10 sq ft per bird in the run. Kruer Bantam Coop The Kruer Bantam Coop began as a simple project coop.  I had the summer off and free time on my hands.  My husband brought home a bunch of scrap 2 x 4s from work.  So I decided to try my hand at coop building, just a small one that I could sell on CL at the end of summer.  My husband is the carpenter of the family, but I have a little skill with tools, and am always game for a project.  Plus I knew that DH would answer any technical questions I might have, and lend some muscle when needed. Da Chicken Bus Back in the early spring my dog and I found and old school bus out in my friend's woods. I got it for free and had it towed to my place where I sized it up for a serious re-fit to be used as a coop. Below are some pics and short description of the process of turning a short bus into a dee-lux chicken coop. The wife thought I was nuts, but that's already been confirmed. We started building in June 2009... (we have now added NEW PICS for 2011~at bottom of page!) Enjoy~ And finally got it done in Late July! Some inside pics: We painted the inside of the coop so the girls would have something interesting to look at! Our kids had fun painting all the flowers and animals!
