Latebloomer's Chicken Coop

hi. at first i thought of doing an a-frame, it looked like this; i'm in north central vermont, many people commented that i really ought to plan on having more square footage for the chickens because they may have to stay inside the coop for days in the winter, 8-10 square foot per chicken was recommended i wasn't sure where to put my coop, i had three places i thought could work, here's my site plan.  the coop is at location A this is the start of my coop page.  it's base is four solid core wood doors on 4x4's over concrete blocks.  i didn't want to get a... read more

Blaines Chicken Coop

This is the chicken coop my father and I built this fall.  I looked all over the web to try to find some free plans and finally found this plan at buildeasy.com.  We made a couple changes in the framing and design..... no actually, we made several changes but it gave us the dimensions to start with.  The coop is 6'x6'x7'3".   I wanted a really sturdy structure so we used 2"x 6"s instead of 2"x4" for the base.  The bottom has hardware cloth attached to it to prevent any rodents from eating through the floor.  We also framed the walls more like a house instead of... read more

The Chikin Trakter

Here is the Chikin Trakter. It is 4'x10'. The coop is 4' square. The floor of the coop is poultry netting as are the walls of the run. There is no floor in the run. It is framed out with 2x2s. The run door is a mix of scraps we had laying around. The coop door is just a sheet of plywood. We will be reinforcing this as it has bowed a bit. I still need to put a coat of paint on the coop, it is just primed at the moment. It will be white. We made it match our barn which is white with black trim and a red tin roof. The hatches on the side have different purposes. The one on... read more

5/6 Chicken Math? So, I'm still loving my chickens.  So much.  I love coming home after work and checking for eggs with my little brother.  I love stomping around in the yard to find crickets and grasshoppers.  I love getting all torn up by thorns and tall grass and stickers picking dewberries for the girls.  I love watching them take dustbaths.  If I ever did decide to eat meat again, which I don't forsee happening anytime in the near future, I don't think I could eat chicken ever again, I just love them too much.  You don't eat your pets; mine make me breakfast... read more

I bought my chicks and hens thinking our new coop would arrive sooner than it did. But we got busy building a tractor and had two humungous totes we used for brooders. That took care of things temporarily. Within a week, I knew the chicks were outgrowing their brooder boxes. Yikes! So I got busy building a brooder pen in my regular shed. I actually built it on top of my work bench which is 6 ft wide by 3 ft deep. At the time, I was low on funds so I used whatever wood I had laying around. I had to be creative and I worried how I was going to do this. I don't have... read more

Laurajean's Chicken Coop

Welcome to my BYC Page!   I've created this page with a focus on my coop/run, my pride and joy. I took a lot of time thinking and planning, and my efforts paid off with a great, maintenance free coop, if I do say so myself!     My Coop:    I designed the run myself, stealing good ideas from others, and combined features I liked along with many of my own ideas. The hen house is 4’ x 4’ x 6’ ½” at its tallest point, with a shingled slant roof. I got it from Craigs’ List. It has an egg door, the chicken "pop" door and then at the side a larger door for... read more

Our Chicken Tractor

Our Open Air Chicken Tractor Our chicken tractor is 8' x 6'. It is 4' tall in the back, and 3 1/2' tall in the front. It has a door on the side and one on the front. It also has a small door in the back to get the eggs from the nest box. There are 2 roosts and 1 nest box inside. The tin for the roof is cut at 5 1/2' long. We used 10" wheels on the back to make it easy to move. We use it for younger chickens and also to quarantine, or just about anything. It has alot of uses. This is a view of the nest box and roosts The inside and doors This is the back, and... read more

Project Chicken Coop

Project "Chicken Coop" What started out as a weekend project, turned out to be a month long endeavor.  My husband and I decided that since our kids were leaving the "nest" in a couple of years, we would try our hands with some new "kids".  After months of pouring over BYC examples, my talented husband got an idea in his head and came up with the following:                He used all the scrap wood so it was off to Lowes!! First of many trips.                                 Our golden doodle "Zoe" inspects the coop and gives her... read more

Jteam's Chicken Coop

After much searching on the web for designs I liked, I finally decided to build my own backyard coop. It was a good thing too, because the girls were getting way too big for the dog crate we were temporarily keeping them in. Part of this coop started life as an old homemde "dog box" that fit inside the bed of a compact pickup truck. This was left over from years ago when I deer hunted and it was no longer being used. The treated lumber was holding up well so I decided to make some use of it. The lower portion underneath the coop is the old dog box. I just started framing... read more
