Incubator mk2 (with nichrome wire heater and auto turner)

Just though I'd share this after a poor experience with last hatch. My main gripes last time were not enough room for eggs and the light bulb went pop on day 18.   So the basis of it is a cool box, I brought for 5 pounds from as supermarket. The window is 2 CD cases cut in glued with silicone sealant and lots of fashing tape   Here is the "Control unit" using an unused guitar pedal case going spare. I have a fairly standard Veleman MK138 kit with a couple of mods as per recommended to make the range suitable for incubation, higher temps and low... read more

Chicken Coop & Run 6ft x 8ft

Well it's been a month since I started.  Almost finished close enuff to post photos, etc.  I chose to build the frming from 2 x 6 lumber; ripped each board to 2-5/8" and then re-ripped each piece to 2-1/2".  I would highly reccomend using Spruce aka whitewood; there are no stresses in the wood like pressure treated yellow pine.  If you use pine, figure on extra 25% waste for all the boards that bend, bow, twist and become unusable.  You really don't require maximum strength from your lumber for a coop.  The siding is cement type Hardiboard.  The hardware cloth on the... read more

Coup de Poup! A CC Only review....

Like most people, I did it backwards. Chicks first! Coop? Okay...we can use that old shed. My husband nixed that idea in a heartbeat. The shed was low, you couldn't walk in...too much work! My husband saw a CC Only ad in one of the chicken magazines I bought...and we bought. Without checking the web! It's also my first time keeping chickens. Wet behind the ears, making mistakes. It's okay, it's going to work out!   The dilapidated shed. The interior was spider infested, there were weird stains on the flooring. Thoughts were maybe pesticides, herbicides. No... read more

Armorfirelady's Fire Chickens Hoop Coop

I am a newbie to chicken raising since I purchased my chickens in August 2012. I have 4 hatchery Plymouth Partridge Rocks.   I originally purchased one of those cute prefabricated chicken coops that state they will house between 4-6 chickens.(they were stretching the truth on that)   I then attached an enclosed 4x8 run out of lattice work.    As soon as the 4 hens started growing I realized they needed a bigger coop. There is no way 4 LF hens can fit in there comfortably.   So then after being on this forum I realized a hoop coop is what I needed. Others... read more

Lil Red and White House

We have been discussing getting chicks for almost two years and this year we took the plunge and bought ten chicks.   Here they are as babies..:) so cute - ten of them, four rhode island reds, three buffs and three Delawares.          SO we immediately started to build their coop..   It ended up being 8 by 10, however we lost two feet to storage, so the chicks actually have an 8 by 8 coop (i thnk I am not good at this measurement build thing)   But it works like this, you open the coop door, and walk in to a small storage area, where I keep their... read more

Small Urban Coop in the heart of Seattle

Moved our 4, 7 week-old chickens (BO, Barred Rock, Welsummer & Red SL) out to the coop today. Still need to finish the run and add the nesting boxes but the DW said either the chickens sleep out in the coop or I do so today was moving day. Hope to build the nesting boxes and finish enclosing the run tomorrow. The coop is roughly 4'x4' sitting over a 4'x8' run.   Looking at the coop from our house. You can see the Ador automatic door. Raising the door 12" off the floor (I hope to use DLM) necessitated moving door to the right which means a challenge for... read more
