Coop de Princesses

  • by mrealm

I have wanted to raise chickens for several years.  I decided to take the plunge this spring, when the local TSC had some chics available, and purchased my flock of 8.  There was one major issue; I didn’t have a coop or the slightest idea as to what I was going to do for one.  We seemed to have an extra-long winter this year, the temperature outside was still hanging between the 20's and 30's, and I figured that I had several weeks to determine what to do for a coop and set up the brood in the garage.   I started looking at coops for sale on the internet and finally... read more

Cluckingham Palace

Five beautiful eight week old girls are relaxing in their new digs. 66 square feet of feathery delight that includes a 1976 street address from Mexico that my dad made. It's a lot of fun to check in on them and to walk into the coop with a tasty treat. Looking forward to fresh eggs in a few months. read more

Cross' Cozy Coop

This little coop has been a long time coming! Well, it feels like a long time. Before launching into the chick club last summer after my husband and I decided they would be the perfect pet for our family, I spent the last 10 months working to get the ordinance changed to allow chicks in Rockledge, FL. Thanks to help from Avid Homestead and many open-minded and diligent civil servants, the ordinance was officially changed Feb 6, 2013. I started construction a week later :)   I wanted to use materials we already had or could get on the cheap (uh hum, free), even if... read more

Uglywon's Coop

I am a newbie. I've been wanting chickens for some time. My wife had one condition if I built a coop...that it be 'cute.'  I like to build stuff and just finished up a two story garage and needed another project.  I cannot say it is an original design since I borrowed ideas from many different coops built by other folks.  This weekend I'm installing an automatic door.  And, hopefully a functional cupola soon.  The gang seems very pleased.                 Fabio keeping watch.   read more

McClure Walk-In 5x10

2013 Walk In Chicken Coop -- The old coop was too small, not insulated, lacked ventilation. It could not hold more than 10 hens. This year we had three groups of birds: (laying hens, baby chicks and feathered fledglings).   The new walk in coop will have insulation, windows on the South side for solar heating in the winter, a radiant barrier on the roof to prevent overheating during the Summer, electrical for lights, storage for equipment and supplies and secure windows that close on any predators that attack through the windows.   The interior... read more

Vent Gleet aka Nasty Chicken Butt

Vent Gleet  "Nasty Chicken Butt" The word “Gleet” derives from the Latin “glittus”meaning “Sticky” so “Vent Gleet” is “Sticky Vent”   Vent Gleet is a chronic disease of the cloaca, also called the "vent" ,"butt", or as my 5 year old sons suggests "The Tweeter".  Vent Gleet is also referred to as an avian yeast infection, cloacitis, thrush, mycosis and fungal Infection.  Vent Gleet is mainly seen in laying hens and much less commonly in males. In waterfowl, it may be associated with lack of access to water in which to defecate while swimming.   Vent... read more

Henry's Hens

Describe 'Henry's Hens' here This is a total copy of Coop de la Ville's coop, I loved it so much I gave a picture to our builders and they did a great job !  With just a few modifications.  Our run and coop are both smaller, and the coop is inside the run instead of attached.  We have pails of flowers hanging instead of window boxes.  The girls love their new home ! read more

The Cheapeasy - Ultra Stealth Coop

So our town voted against having chickens because the animal shelter cannot accommodate a chicken. The shelter can handle pit bulls, feral animals, snakes, but God forbid a rogue chicken.   Rather than deal with fighting city hall idiots, we built an ultra-stealthy coop we like to call the "Cheep-Easy".   The beauty of this coop is threefold:   CHEAP -  total cost of closet door runner, two pieces of plywood, several trellis(we already had the dog run) and some hardware cloth.   FUN - indoor viewing window!   STEALTHY - you cannot see anything from... read more
