country tractor

Describe 'country tractor' here I had a friend show me a tractor similar to the ones that I am using now.  I like to move my coops daily, but I like a coop to have a balance of shade and sunlight.  The coops are right above the run but as long as I move them daily I dont run into any problems with run space.  They are 4x8 with a 4x4 or 4x5 coop on top. I use 6 inch wheels on all my coops, and automatic watering systems made from various buckets that i have collected at my job.  I use 1 nipple per 4 chickens on my watering systems.  These are two tractors that i am... read more

6 Chick Shanty

When my husband and I decided to start raising our own chickens, we decided we wanted a coop that would be affordable, modest, functional and NOT an eyesore. We decided to model it after our shed, which the coop and chicken yard are attached to. You can see the coop is the smaller building to the left! We placed vents all around on all 4 walls to let out heat in the summer. We live in Louisiana so the winters are very mild, and the summers very hot and humid. So in addition to the vents we put the coop in the shady part of our yard. We enclosed the yard on all... read more

Palmers Peepers

Our coop is finally done!!  Like many before us we jumped into chicken ownership blind.  My husband and I had promised the kids chickens a few months back when we bought a house that had acreage.              On March 2nd we had taken a trip to the local "Rural King" and to my delight it was chick days.  I just couldn't walk away from those baby chicks.  We purchased 10 chickens of different varieties and a "temporary" coop that they sold at the store.     ... read more

Chick Charm's Chicken Coop

Rise & Shine Custom Coops     "I would never eat a cows tongue.  Gross.  Give me an egg". That was a long standing statement by my grandfather (he hated cows tongue) to garner a little chuckle for its humor.  It certainly had its effect.   First I bought 10 day olds from the feed store.  5 Red Sex Links and 5 Rhode Island Reds.  Sadly one Sex Link didn't make it through the day.  So nine birds it was.  AT FIRST!  Miss Bossy, Scrambled, Brownie, Poached, Little Red Riding Hood, Miss Talk-A-Lot, Cutie Pie, Old Maid and BBQ were their names. Later we added... read more

chicken foot coop

The "Chicken Foot" coop was a brain storm I had, when my next door neighbor was taking an old porch down from a mobile home.  He was going to take it to the landfill, but I asked him if I could have it...he said yes, what are you going to use it for?...I can make a chicken coop out of it!  These are the pics of the old porch "Chicken Foot" coop.             read more

Layer's Lair

Layer's Lair   Our finished Chicken Coop Tractor.   My son Drew wanted to raise some chickens for a 4-H project and my wife had already been wanting some for eggs, so we built a small coop. We didn't want anything big, because we only wanted a few birds ... wound up getting four. A friend told us about chicken coop "tractors" that can be moved and that sounded like a good fit for us. He has 2 small coups with handles on each side so they can be picked up and moved, but we wanted ours to be able to be rolled so it would only take one person to move it. We... read more

Virginia Woodland Coop

After nine months of having three chickens in a tractor, we've recently finished building a permanent structure. As we're in Virginia, we are trying to take both our hot, humid summers and our sometimes bitter winter spells into consideration as we build. The last nine months has taught us a lot - mostly about what we'd do differently when we built a permanent coop! I posed a question to BYC members via the thread "Coop Builders - What would you have changed or done differently?" that yielded a lot of wonderful ideas and information that we're incorporating... read more

Building as I go

Armorfirelady's Fire Chickens Hoop Coop

I am a newbie to chicken raising since I purchased my chickens in August 2012. I have 4 hatchery Plymouth Partridge Rocks.   I originally purchased one of those cute prefabricated chicken coops that state they will house between 4-6 chickens.(they were stretching the truth on that)   I then attached an enclosed 4x8 run out of lattice work.    As soon as the 4 hens started growing I realized they needed a bigger coop. There is no way 4 LF hens can fit in there comfortably.   So then after being on this forum I realized a hoop coop is what I needed. Others... read more
