Construction

  • by owler

Construction I started this building process in mid September 2010.  I vowed not to order chicks until the coop was completed.  I really did not want to have the chicks in the house and I know my wife would not appreciate it.  The process took a lot longer than I anticipated and guess what?  I ordered the chicks before the coop was done for two reasons: Gives me a deadline to finish. I really wanted fresh eggs by spring time and the hatcheries stop deliving in Mid November. Well the coop was completed and ready for chicks a little over one week ahead of... read more

Zenbirder's Solar Heated - Solar Powered Chicken Coop

Solar Heated - Solar Powered Coop This coop is a 8' by10' building located at 6000 feet in the mountains of Southwest New Mexico.  We start with the basic building, solar additions are described below.  It was constructed with 2X4 walls and set on cement blocks.  The floor and walls inside and out are OSB (oriented strand board).  There is fiberglass insulation in all walls.  The windows were handmade and are double pained glass.  The immediate yard has PVC supports for chicken wire sides and birdnetting top. The cupola is closed and insulated in winter.  In the... read more

Chicken Palace

Here is our Chicken Palace.            This is prior to the paint.   This is an ongoing project and is no weekender.   We acquired 27 RIR (26 pullets and 1 cockerel) and a White Crested Black Polish in June.  We picked up 3 RIR hens, 3 BO hens and 1 BR hen in August.  We then got 1 BO hen with 4 peeps.  We are getting between  6 & 8 eggs per day. The Palace is 10'x14' with a 10'x4' feed room.  There are  8 nest boxes on the back wall     which can be harvested from the outside.  I have 24' of roost   that is on a hinge so it can be lifted out of the way for... read more

Wendyskill's Chicken Coop

My New Coop I started with an old run-in shed that was previously used for the horses.   I attached 4x4's at the base to work off.  Found left-over Blue Stone for walkway.   Purchased a door, 2 windows and some 2x4's from a re-store that deconstructs houses and resells the material.   Framing, my egg collecting/nesting box done, windows and door in.     That's pretty much it for construction pictures.... I was too busy working.   Here is the finished product:     Nesting Boxes   Made hardware wire frames for windows and door w/... read more

Peehead's Chicken Coop

Peehead's coop  I used cedar board-n-bat for a rustic look. The dimensions are 8 x 4 if I remember right and betwteen 6 and 8 feet high.  I put it about a foot above the ground to give the girls more ground space and to deter rodents and preditors from living underneath.                 I found old glass bricks and an old window so I decides to do something with them.     read more

K8tiecat's Chicken Coop

Oh Darn!  How did these chickens get here?! My obsession with chicks began while I was doing research on pest control.  After studying for nearly a year and planning a coop and run, 10 chicks won my heart forever.  I had to hurdle an obstacle with my City, however, because I accidentally put my coop too close to the fence and while I had the approval of all my neighbors, a hostile psycho visitor complained to the City which brought the location to their attention.  My City was terrific tho, and even though I initially lost all my hens and it took one year to settle the... read more

The Avairy Construction

2010.....So the construction on our new aviary started on August 21 2010 with the first digging of the "pond".... It continued on Friday August 27th and 28th as we decided to scratch what we had and start over....Our pen originally started out as a 50x100 with a 25x40 pond that would have a 10x10 island in the middle. Since then it has grown to a 125x75 pen with a pond that is about 45x50 with a 25x25 canal connecting it to a 30x40 pond. Yeah our pen is going to be half water. On Wednesday Sept 1st the trench digger came out to put in the drain pipe and the water... read more

Barn Style Coop w/Storage

Barn Style Coop w/Storage The mostly finished project.  Is it ever really done?? I would like to include the original plans I drew up for the coop, but my husband left them outside and they got rained on, tromped on, and then finally thrown away.  *sigh*  But considering he's worked his tail off getting this thing built I can't complain too much.  I redrew my plans so I could post them here.  Please note I am not an architect, so the interior plans don't take into account the 4 inches lost on each side of the coop for 2 X 4's, nor blocking nor bracing for doors and... read more

Sweetchicks's Chicken Coop

"The Chilton" http://www.backyardchickens.com/ This is how our coop came about.  We have two boys 11 and 7, our oldest son joined the 4-H Club at his school.  He selected the Poultry project, two years in a row, no chickens 1st yr..  I put off ordering the chicks for over a year!  After being asked over and over "When are we getting the chicks?", we ordered 25 from McMurray Hatchery and got a free exotic chick. Now proud owners of 16 Black Australorps, 9 Red Leghorns and 1 Black Crested White Polish.  Oh, after the coop was complete that brooder box was so lonley... read more
