100 Pictures of my Flock: 2013 Edition

100 Pictures of my Flock 2013 Edition Welcome to 100 Pictures of my Flock, the 2013 edition! 100 Pictures of my Flock started out as a summer project in 2012, but I soon found that it was, well, surprisingly difficult to take 100 themed pictures over the course of only a few months. This time around, the project will last the entire year, and as such I have added seasonal themes to my list! Basically, 100 Pictures of my Flock is a fun project for which I have thought of 100 different themes applying to my flock of chickens and Guinea fowl, and the goal is to... read more

Eloise and Abelard, Alex and Pope

This is a case of bad naming, just not in the way I planned.     All 4 birds are lovely Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks that I bought from BYC'er Shannon from DieFly Ranch.  We thought that Abelard was a badly named pullet, but she..er..he ended up being correctly named.  Poor Eloise, he is a badly named roo.  8)     (Eloise, giving me the stinkeye. I am of course untrustworthy)   Eloise makes up for his "Sue-class" name by being the biggest, toughest roo on the block.     Here is he is pushing everyone off the delicious Xmas leftovers and diving... read more

Axl the EE

  • by kahlua

Axl was hatched out from some eggs I bought on ebay. It was my first time successfully hatching eggs, and I was thrilled to have 10 little ones hatch!   Here he is on the left...straight out of the incubator.         A little older here - it's becoming more obvious that he's a boy - and I didn't intend to keep any boys from this hatch - but he was really cool looking so I held onto him.       Feathered out...   Here he is at about 7 months old...I'm very happy I kept him. He turned out gorgeous, and he's such a good roo. Very sweet to... read more

My Oreo Cookie

Oreo is a 1 year old Barred Plymouth Rock hen. She is one of my four chickens.   Last December my uncle moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio and decided to start a farm. The first thing that he did was buy 68 chicks from Mount Healthy Hatchery. However, he did not have the land for the chickens so I raised them for him in my garage and  then garden. They provided an amazing amount of compost and our garden has never been better. Five months later the pullets were ready to go out to the farm. As a thank you for raising the flock my uncle let me keep my four... read more

"The Dirty Dozen" - My First Flock

I had been wanting to get chickens for quite a while but thought I never would be able to due to zoning laws, and I knew we wouldn't be able to move anytime soon. After many years of knowing I couldn't have any, I decided to check the zoning laws again and found that they had changed!! I could have chickens!! I placed an order that day! So, here is my first batch of chicks' baby photos. They have grown so fast (as babies do!) since these photos were taken 8 weeks ago. I will have to post again soon to show off their juvenile pics. Enjoy the... read more

I named him Boss because he is the Boss of my Barred Rock flock.  Boss's Hobbies are: Crowing, Pecking, mating with the hens, and Managing the flock of Barred Rocks.   Boss is a heavy bodied, Beautiful bird with a lot of spunk. Though he is only 19 weeks old, Boss is a good leader with a mighty crow. Boss keeps all my hens and roosters in line. Boss is my protector and the dominant male of the flock. He is my man!   Boss, at only 8 weeks... read more

Isabelle My Dear Silkie!

Isabelle:   I got Isabelle as a straight run chick from Atwood's. She was a healthy chick when I got her, but then she got majorly sick. She was almost dead when she "pulled up" and started eating and drinking. I continued taking care of her, and, despite silkies growing slow, she grew up quickly! She grew from a tiny, sickly chick, to a large, full-fledged hen in no time at all. However, she took forever to come into lay!    She was almost 11 months old when she finally started to squat. A few days later, she happily sang the... read more

Clucky's Chickys!

Two years ago I was begging my Mom and Dad for a pet, because my older siblings had goats and chickens and rabbits and a dog and a hamster. One Night we were at the dinner table when my sister asked my Dad a question. "Can we Please get a pet?" Being frustrated by the constant begging for dogs and cats and what not. "At least chickens!?" I begged. Dad flung up his arms. 'Yes! Yes! We can get Chickens!" He exasperatingly said. Our jaws hung open for a moment or two and then I popped another question. "You are not kidding are you?" Dad is sarcastic and serious all the... read more

Iowa Blue Official Standard

  • by Hurley

Current Status:  Complete, In Final Revisions with IBCC Standards Committee   Iowa Blue Standard   The Iowa Blue was developed in the early 1900's near Decorah, Iowa.  Little is known about its origins, but a folk legend tells the story of a white Plymouth Rock hen emerging from under a building with a clutch of chicks colored solid chestnut to striped.  Old-timers tell the tale that the chicks were sired by a pheasant.  The breed was carried by several Iowa hatcheries through the 1960s, but was nearly lost when the hatcheries went... read more
