We are very new to chickens and pets. In fact they are our first pet as a family. They came with the 5 acre property we purchased in December. And we just love them! We never knew that chickens had such personality. The original 3 hens are - Washington (light Sussex), Breanna (Isa Brown) and Coolie (Barnevelder). There's Obama (an Australorp) and... read more
Our Buff Orpingtons are coming!!! We get them in 2 weeks and I could not be more excited. My husband is a little indifferent to the whole thing, but I told him once he sees the chicks, his heart will melt. I am so excited I can't take it. We've decided to give them funny food names. My husband and I are both foodies, and I am a vegetarian, so I wanted to give them vegetarian names. Cheddar, Biscuit, Pimento, Omelette and Pancake. Aren't those just the cutest names. I'll post pictures when they get here. We ordered them through Cackle Hatchery. read more
The Urban City Girls Hi everyone! I thought I should just make a chicken page to show off my chickens! It all started about 2 years ago where our friends got chickens. We saw them and finally decided to get some of our own. They are all grown up now. I did havw ten, but It was to much so I rehomed 6. So then it was down to four. But then I found a new friend to add. Enough with me jabbering and let me introduce them: This is Bonnie, a Rhode Island Red. She... read more
For several years we had hatched some eggs in a friend's homemade incubator. We only kept the chicks for a week, and then gave them to a local farmer. I always wanted to keep "just one," but we just didn't know much about chickens, so we always ended up giving all the chicks away. Hatching eggs did get me interested in chickens, and several years later I did lots of reading and research and began the process of getting chickens. After I had done all that reading, it was time to get the show on the road. A local feed and garden store was getting in several... read more
Miracle is probably my sweetest chicken. She's hilarious, adorable, and fluffy. I thought I'd share some of the smiles she gives me, or at least try to. In May, we had a chicken who was rejected by the flock (Pecked until blood was drawn, etc.) and had to separate her. Knowing that chickens were flock animals, we knew we had to get her a 'sister'. I walked into the chicken pen at the feed store, looking for a silkie or possibly another Brahma. But no- I saw a small Easter Egger who hadn't even gotten her beard yet, hatched in April. I fell in love with her, and... read more
Boots: I got Boots at an Atwoods' feed store. She was the only Cochin that wasn't afraid of me. I loved her a lot, and held her all the time. The result is a wonderful young hen whom loves to cuddle. Boots on the right, Splash on the left Boots is gentle and tame. Her favorite treat is cherry tomatoes. She will leap up onto my lap or shoulder for these, and I am not kidding! :D Boots once laid her egg in my shoes, which I had left near the chicken coop when I put on my rubber boots to go into the coop in. When I put my shoe in, well, you know... read more

At the end of April 2012, I went to the local feed store and picked up four chicks: a Barred Rock, a Black Sexlink, and two Black Australorps. They spent their first six weeks of life in a playpen up in our spare bedroom. Four weeks of my life were spent in that room because whenever they were left alone, they'd scream their little heads off. They were too cute and sweet to be left alone. They've become beautiful girls and I love them dearly. This is Muffet. As a chick, she would flutter up to my shoulder and jump on my head. She'd settle up there and... read more
