The Lap Chicken

  • by DonnaW

In the Spring of 2012 I decided to add a few new girls to my flock.  Quite by accident we ran into a breeder that was selling what she called "Golden Pencil Leg Hamburgs".  I had never seen this breed in person but their coloring interested me because they reminded me of Ruffed Grouse.  I purchased 4 pullets who were 3 months old.  Needless to say my flock was not immediately welcoming to the new girls.  To kindof keep peace at roosting time, I would go to the chicken house and just sit with the flock until everyone was safely on the roost.  One of the new... read more

Rocky The Rooster!

This is an article dedicated to the life of one amazing little rooster!   Rocky was an Old English Game Bantam rooster. He was 6 months old in the pictures, and quite a beautiful boy! He was the leader of the flock. He was a good leader, though. On September 25th, 2012, he was found dead after a dog got loose and killed some chickens. He is still missed greatly. This is the memorial to him.    This is Rocky. He was so photogenic!     He was such a poser!   Stink-eye king!   Posing for the camera. He's adding beauty to the ugly background.... read more

The Egg-less Urban Chicken Farm

I got my first chicks from my son's preschool, where they thought it would be "fun" for the kids to watch chicks hatch. Out of 9 eggs, 1 hatched. The teachers taught a lesson on the facts of life that day and quickly purchased a couple friends for the poor lonely hatch-ling. We had to re-home 2 of the three original birds as they were cockerels, but the third, a bantam Cochin is part of the flock. The first set of chicks were hatched around May 9th. We have yet to see any eggs...lazy California chicks.    Here are our girls:    The little black Cochin on the... read more

The Runaway Chicken (Nomad's New Home) *~Pictures Of Nomad~*

(This story is 100% true!)     On the night of November seventeenth, when we locked up the coop, the last thing I expected to see was an unusual double of my pretty blue Ameracauna, Fancy Feet. I thought I was just seeing a different chicken. But, no...     Meet Nomad, an extraordinary chicken with a long and twisted tale to tell.      Nomad's life began at a small house in Garnet, where a lady bred and raised Ameracaunas for an additional income. We found an advertisement about her chicks, fell in love, and made the decision then and there to... read more

Lost and Found

About a year ago I lost my home.  My husband and I both lost our jobs within a week of each other.  It was devastating as we were caring for a few other family members that had lost their livelihoods.  When we lost our home we sold everything.  Only what we could keep in the truck and still have room to sleep in it stayed.  That means that all of our furniture, our clothes, our electronics and our pets.  Out of all the stuff that we lost we missed our chickens the most.  We had a flock of about 30 or so.  Out of that flock there were two that were especially precious. ... read more

Companions

The passion for chickens, it starts differently for all of us and takes a different path for all of us as well. My birds are my comapnions. I speak to them and they listen without judgement. They let me hold them and cry into their soft feathers when I am sad and boy oh boy do they love testing new goodies when I get into the baking frenzy. My birds brought me out of a deep depression last summer and I am forever greatful to them. I also suffer with fibromyalgia and RA, these birds give me a reason to push myself to get up... read more

My Best Boy Jagger!

'My Best Boy Jagger!'    Old English Game bantam (or so I believe) 2-3 years old Adopted him so he wouldn't go in the pot (wouldn't have made much of a meal he's tiny)   He would have to be the most charming gentleman I have ever met..... he taught all of my Ex-Battery hens how to be chickens, He was so delightful to watch teaching them to scratch, dust bath and all other perfect chicken things! It might sound strange but I never saw him mate with them until they were back to full health and fully feathered again. he loves sneaking into the house to... read more
