His name is Big Boy

Describe 'His name is Big Boy' here   I was brand new to chickens.  I had 7 bitties in the brooder that were 1 week old when Big Boy and his wife One Eyed Jackie, were given to me.  It was only just back in the beginning of April.  We got them at night, and my DH but them in the chicken hutch.  When I went out the next day, and saw them for the first time, the first thing I said when I saw him was "Hi Big Boy".  And that's how he got his name.  Since then, he has proven to be the best rooster anyone could ask for.    One of his favorite activities is to romance... read more

Fitzkee Chickens

Hello this is my first time having chickens. I was hopeing someone could tell me what kind of chickens I have. I know I have a few roosters but there is a couple we are not sure of. I have 13 chickens we got them from someone who has tons of chickens, so I am guessing there is some cross breeding going on. I am going to add a few pictures If anyone can try to help me out I would really, really appricate it! Thanks a bunch!!   read more

New Keeper Of Silkies

Hello everyone. I have had my 4 Silkies for a few months now, as far as I know they are around 19 weeks old. I care for them like they are my children I have found out, through trial and error that my girls love broccoli, grapes, coliflower and lettuce, they do not like strawberries, cucumber or carrots. Would love some help on sexing them if anyone has any ideas. So that's me, a mum of 4 girls (human ) and 4 beautiful Silkie girls/boys. Kristin's Chickens: Generation 7

The Fab Five! Generation 7, otherwise known as the Fab Five, came as a surprise to me. One day, my mom told me that she had ordered some chicks from Meyer Hatchery and that if I had any requests or changes in mind for the order, I should go look at their website. She had ordered two Partridge Plymouth Rocks, two speckled Sussex, and the last remaining blue splash Marans, all sexed pullets. I had many ideas in mind but, knowing my limitations (especially in coop size), I refrained from adding anything to the order. We drove over to pick the chicks up, fearing for... read more

Our backyard flock

For years I had been wanting to get chickens.  I remember my mom bought me a book called "Chickens in Your Backyard" about 10-15 years ago and it quickly became well-loved and read but at the time, chickens just were not a possibility.  Finally, this year, while visiting our local feed store to see the chicks with my mom and kids, I said, "now's the time."  So the kids and I came up with an elaborate plan to convince my husband that we couldn't live without chickens.  When he got home from work, we attacked with our plan fully expecting to be turned down.  The... read more

Fantastic 4 1

Describe 'Fantastic 4+1' here I had been wanting chickens for several summers, but being a full-time college student and working made it hard to get started. Finally, I recieved my degree in December 2011 and the following Spring my plans for a backyard flock began to take realistic shape. We live in the city so Roosters were not an option, but I had been in contact with the local feed store and they let me know when they would be getting their first shipment of pullets. I was so excited I could hardly wait! I began planning my run and getting a brooder and supplies... read more

It started with two chicks....

I had been intrested with the idea of chickens for a while, especially silkies. We found a local breeder in florida and went to check out the silkies she had. We originally thought, "One chicken should be enough for the local show right?". We learned that chickens are social animals and ended up with two silkie chicks, a blue and a partridge...later named, Pebbles and Bam-Bam...     And then came the coop. Just a simple 4 foot would be enough for two chickens, right?   Well....once Pebbles and Bam-Bam were about 2 or so months old...My Ag teacher... read more

Agnes the Silkie

Agnes is a Silkie I purchased at our local Chicken Swap. I went to "browse" and ended up high-tailing it out there with two baby (1 week old) silkies, a blue and a partridge, tucked in the bottom folds of my shirt! I wasn't guaranteed any sex so I'm crossing my fingers that neither of them are roos. I guess I will have to wait for an egg or a crow!   I named the blue Agnes because of the movie "Despicable Me". I still feel it is a perfect name for her. She is a round butterball and super fluffy. At just over 2 months old now, her downy fluff is coming out like... read more

Kristin's Chickens: The Easter-Eggers

NOTE: This page contains all my Easter-eggers except Cub and Chickie (who are here), Merlin (who is here), and Betty (who has her own page here). The Easter-Eggers of Generation 6 Easter-eggers were one of our first breeds and since we were down to three, we decided to replenish their population in our flock. I love how many different colors they can come in and I hoped desperately to have a rainbow of Easter-eggers in the batch we got. I was not disappointed. Not only did these birds have the beautiful colors I had hoped for, but they had personalities that... read more
