Blue Lace Red Wyandotte

My name is Tina and I live in PA. I have always wanted chickens but my husband was reluctant to get any. Then one day he came home with 16 commercial laying  hens that were in full blown molt! The company was giving them away and he decided he would bring me some.  Now mind you this was in the middle of February these poor chickens hardly had any feathers to keep them warm!  I wasn't prepared to have these birds and had to do some quick thinking to get them warm! They turned out to be golden comets and did very well once they figured out how to be a chicken.  They had... read more

Pictures of Our Flocks: A Community Picture Project

Pictures of Our Flocks A Community Picture Project Welcome to 'Pictures of Our Flocks'! For general information about the project, check out this page! A special thanks to cluckcluckluke for the idea of making this community project. Pictures of Our Flocks is a project for which the community enters pictures that match themes, the goal being to check every theme off. For this project, I have decided not to include an 'end date', and instead allow the project to keep going until each and every theme is checked off! Everyone is welcome to add their pictures once... read more

County Boy's Mottled Cochin

I started my Mottled Cochin's on accident. I got my first roo Dudley at an auction for $14. I later swapped eggs for Splash Cochin hens.   I had a large pen of Cochins and Dudley quickly rose to the top of the pecking order and breeding all of my hens. I got lots of  blue chicks from this breeding. I didn't get mottling on any because both of they parents have to carrry the mottled gene to produce mottled chicks. I will get mottled from them if I breed them together or to a Mottled rooster. I kept 3 cockerel and 6 hens from them. My favorite cockerel was... read more

Puffy the poodle chicken

This is Puffy sleeping with her stuffed kitty. She loves her kitty.   Puffy is a 1 yr & 9 month old silkie, that thinks she is a poodle. She lives in the house with our 2 toy poodles. She follows them around and when they bark she copies them. When the dogs go out on the deck she goes out with them, when they come in she follows them back in. She doesn't act like a chicken. She wears little chicken diapers, and wants to be held most of the time when she is not in her cage. She doesn't like to go outside for very long. She doesn't like the cold or the... read more

Three Happy Hens

Last summer my husband and I decided to raise chickens so we could have an ethical way of getting eggs. We live in a tract home with a decent sized backyard and figured we had enough space for three chickens.  I started researching the various breeds that are both good pets and good layers.  After creating a homemade brooder box, we were ready to purchase our chicks.  I went to a local feed store and purchased a White Plymouth Rock, a Buff Orpington, and a Speckled Sussex.      2 day old Chicks.     Sunny, the Buff... read more

Ramona CA Chicken Newbie

My husband and I just moved here from Minnesota and I started my first flock.   I am a full time artist and he works in the medical industry. He is not a big "chicken" fan and was not keen on having them. I ventured on my own and he is definately on board. I am sure once the eggs start coming in, he will be more enthusiastic about them being part of our lives. We have two horses, three dogs, a cat, canaries, and fish, so we have quite the mini farm to begin with. I have two Barred Rocks, 2 Silkies, 1 Buff Orp, 1 Australorp, 2 Cuckoo Marans, and 1 Ameruacana.... read more

My Little Urban Farm Flock

When my husband and I bought our 100+ year old house on the Near East Side of Indianapolis in 2008 we began gardening right away, but it took 4 years before we were able to add chickens to our little homestead. When I began working on a small farm in 2009 and became exposed to the freshest of foods, I also began to entertain the idea of raising chickens for the eggs in my own backyard. There were a lot of factors that keep my desire to have a few laying hens from happening right away, but finally in the summer of 2012 we got our back yard fully fenced in and I began... read more
