Well, Jamey and I (Lori) decided we wanted to make use of the coop and run that came with the house we recently moved into. I come from a chicken farming family from years ago (commercially grown, not yard birds), and Jamey's parents had a couple of chickens when he was a child; however, neither of us have ever raised our own. We love the ones we have now, but occassionally feel we are in over our heads... so many questions. We have 5 Barred Rocks (19 weeks old), 2 RIR's (uncertain of age), 2 White Leghorns (uncertain of age and not even certain they are Leghorns)... read more
Welcome to the Heffner Hen House! Our first flock became a reality on Friday, March 8th, 2013. We are newbies at the chicken raising. We bought 4 Cochin Bantams at the Arcadia Small Animal Auction. They were young pullets and one about ready to become a layer. Beautiful feathers, clean, sharp, bright eyes, and sweet a pie! We named them (in order of size - big to little) Big Mama, Marshmellow, Rosie, and Hannah. I am still trying to figure out what type of Cochin the four of them are. Learning is a process. This is Big Mama. The girls in their... read more
Here are all our girls, and our boy DuckDuck. Our girls started out as two older ladies saved from the local cage farm. These poor ladies were locked in a tiny cage in terrible conditions. They now have space to move, warm beds and tons of grass and insects to feast on. Since then our flock has grown, we have added a pair of ducks, three more hens and a pair of chicks one of our girls hatched when we got a few fertile eggs for her to sit on. read more

Hello from sunny Pensacola, FL. I'm Sharon and My Fiance and I just started our first flock. It all started with my mother in law! She was moving and needed someone to take care of her 9 hens till she was all moved in and had a new coop built. after a few months of feeding the girls and gathering eggs both Kyle (my fiance) and I fell in love with the chickens and took on a whole new little brood of our own. We started out with just a few but then went back to the store and got a few more and wound up with the perfect little mix of a 9 three day old baby chicks. They... read more
