New to web site. Need advise on how to help my sick chick!

Hi! I am new to owning chickens and would appreciate any help. One of my Silkies (2 weeks old) has a water eye that's irritated and a little red. I can tell its really bothering the chick because it keeps scratching at it. All around the eye the feather are all matted down from the little bit of fluid that is coming from it and I think that's why the chick keeps scratching at it. The fluid is not Pusey though. Its clear fluid. I've been wetting the eye with warm water to give it relief and that does seem to give the chick some relief for a little while. Thank goodness... read more

The Truth About Insuring Hatching Eggs

I recently decided to take the plunge and get some hatching eggs via mail. My first package arrived no issues, so I bought some from the same person. I checked the tracking number over and over, but after the second day, it was never scanned again.   I was heartbroken. My poor eggs! Because they were not insured there was nothing to be done. The wonderful seller sent me more eggs for the cost of shipping, but she could have sold those, so she is out that money. I mentioned to a chicken group that everyone should insure their eggs and the responses I got were... read more

100 Pictures of my Flock: 2013 Edition

100 Pictures of my Flock 2013 Edition Welcome to 100 Pictures of my Flock, the 2013 edition! 100 Pictures of my Flock started out as a summer project in 2012, but I soon found that it was, well, surprisingly difficult to take 100 themed pictures over the course of only a few months. This time around, the project will last the entire year, and as such I have added seasonal themes to my list! Basically, 100 Pictures of my Flock is a fun project for which I have thought of 100 different themes applying to my flock of chickens and Guinea fowl, and the goal is to... read more

Kristin's Chickens: Te Heihei

Te Heihei Chickies!! They've arrived! My order was one each of these breeds: Silver Gray Dorking, Light Brown Leghorn, Exchequer Leghorn, Ancona, Silver Lakenvelder, Golden Campine, Egyptian Fayoumi, Easter-egger bantam, and black frizzle Cochin bantam. They did not have my Dorking due to a poor hatch, but the rest were there and ready to go! So, what I ended up getting was... Rangi the Ancona Trouble, trouble trouble! Rangi puts on the innocent face really well, though! Rangi's name is Maori for 'sky' or 'heavens'. She is named both after the... read more

My Feathered and Fowl Flock of Free-Ranging Chickens

My very first chickens I ever got was in 2010 from some friends with extra pullets from a hatchery order: 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 ISA Browns, 2 Silver-Laced Wyandottes, 1 California Grey Leghorn and 1 Ameraucana. The Orpingtons, Wyandottes, and ISA Browns are still around today. In 2011, I added a Black Star pullet and in 2012, raised 5 Barred Plymouth Rocks and 5 Cherry Eggers (1 of the Cherry Eggers disappeared and the other died last month or so of a possibly internally-laid egg). This year, I added an Easter Egger rooster (Big Moe) in January and am currently raising... read more

Easter Egger Chicks in My Shed

These are my adventures turning the shed into a coop for a batch of Easter Egger chicks...   November 28, 2012:   We have an old shed on the property, divided into three sections with two doors.       One of the sections is 10'x10', perfect for a huge batch of chicks, though I ordered only 25 from Meyer.   I first moved an immense slab of concrete that was blocking the door (bottom left in the pic below).       Then the door came open easily. Inside was kind of a mess. Cobwebs, wasp and hornet nests, nails, roof material, pigs feet... read more

Available for Swap: I am very flexible, so if you want a combination of things, let me know.     Choose two (WYG swap) of the following plants:  (If you want any combinations of items, let me know)       2.   Cissus Quadrangularis/Veldt Grape  This plant is a vining succulent in the grape family which looks really cool in a hanging basket (it needs to come in for the winter, or you could keep it as a houseplant all year round, it won't care) and I am led to believe has some sort of medicinal properties and is made into some sort of Chutney in... read more
