How I got into chickens                                                                                                               Hi this is OrpieLover31 here! I just want to show some of you chicken people out there my story       My first chickens   It all started when we moved to a 5 acre property. It was almost a year that we had moved in, but we all felt like we needed something extra to call it home. Then one day it just hit us, suddenly we all wanted some chickens. We mostly wanted chickens for their eggs. But before we could get... read more

My Sweet Peeps

We're almost to our one year mark of having our chickens in our lives and I have to say it's been a lot of fun. We have 4, but one is very shy and for some reason, runs when I have the camera. ? But the other 3 are actually hard to photograph because every time I get down to chicken level they come running! The camera can only refocus so fast! Blue is a RIR and Harriet is a beautiful big Buff Orpington and we raised them from chicks. When the chicks were about 4 months old we got Nelly, a Barred Rock and also 4 months old at that time, and Phyllis, a Serama... read more

GISA Chickens

We moved to our home in the country in May 2012 after living in Omaha for 8 years.  Our first priority was getting the coop fixed up and adding those fluffy yellow chicks.  But in June the stores were limited to four black-sex links and two Rhode Island Red.  Our kids 10 and 7 were in love.  I needed more and we found a nice man who sold us a black cochin pair who were a year if we bought several other 4 week old chickens.  Old English Bantams, Buff Bantam, and a trio of barred Bantam.  We ended up with more roosters than I realized but Captain is the most personable... read more

The Acres

Here at The Acres, we have a Chicken Ranch (and some baby goats).  I am new to raising chickens and I became very interested and excited to have chickens when I moved here with my husband a year ago. I never knew how enjoyable it could be. I instantly fell in love with his chickens!  I spend a lot of my day out there with them...feeding, watering, talking to them and just watching them.  There are highs and lows to raising them...laughter, sorrow, hard work. So worth it though.   This is "Momma".  She follows me everywhere around The Acres.  Especially when I... read more

Chicka Boom Chicka Boom Doncha Just Love It

Describe 'Chicka Boom Chicka Boom Doncha Just Love It' here   Last May after years of talking about it we received our first chicks in the mail.  Our shipment came from MPC and it included 3 Australorps, 3 Delawares and 2 Red Stars.   One of our Australorps didn't make the night but the remaining 7 grew up to be the most entertaining and useful animals on the place....The dogs make us laugh but the Chickens do that and make us breakfast.   Since then:   My uncle live behind us and he had a lonely mixed breed roo.  One day when our girls were free ranging he... read more

The Adventures of Rocky and Adriane

Describe 'The Adventures of Rocky and Adriane' here   This story is true, although slightly corny and humerous! It seems we have had a huge increase of hawk populations of late.  It's to the point that in order to free range our birds, I have had to become a human, alive scarecrow with a bamboo cane at hand at all times.  The have developed a fly zone (route) through our property. read more
