Our Chicken Obsession

Welcome to ~Our Chicken Obsession~ It started out so simple and small.  My dear hubby, Gary wanted some chickens with good layers we could have plenty for food and they would taste better.  I initally rolled my eyes and said, "uh, huh" which simply means, "Are you crazy?  I know how this work, and I'll be the one taking care of them, don't you think I have enough to do around the house with a new baby.  Besides I really don't like birds."  After him mentioning it off and on for a year and watching his aunt and uncle with their chickens, I slowly began to come... read more

Chicken First Aid Kits - Handy and Essential Supplies, and How to Use Them

Chicken First Aid Kits Sometimes in chicken-keeping, things happen that no one expects. It could be a sudden disease, a squabble between birds causing injuries, or even a predator attack that leaves your birds wounded and weak. For your birds, having certain supplies on hand could make the difference between a recovery and a loss. The list that I have compiled below is as extensive as I could make it, and you may find that many of the items you won’t ever need. I do suggest that anyone keeping chickens, whether as livestock or as pets, keep at least the supplies for... read more

Meet my colorful flock of Aloha Chickens!     What are Aloha Chickens?  A few years ago, I saw a photo of "Swedish Flower Hens" on Feathersite.  I decided they were exactly what I was looking for.  The only problem was, back in 2008, there were NO Swedish Flowers in the United States!  HMMM.  What to do?    Above:  Confetti colored Aloha hen.   So, I set about trying to make my own All-American version of Blommehons, or Swedish Flower Chickens!       I couldn't call them "Swedish Flowers" if they were bred in America and had no... read more

Nambroths Flock

Welcome to Nambroth's Flock! My real name is Jennifer Miller, but I've been posting things on the internet under 'Nambroth' for some 18 years and it sort of stuck.   Thanks for stopping by one of the little corners of the internet dedicated to my bitty flock of chickens.   I have been keeping companion birds (until now, only members of the parrot family) for 27 years, and have found the internet to be a vital tool for consuming as much information, especially up-to-date information, on their overall care. Finally, in 2008, we purchased our first home. I had... read more

Chicky Gaga

It is the standard practice of days-old chicks that when a massive hand descends from above, they choose to run away from it.  Not so in the case of Chicky Gaga, a courageous and eccentric Polish crested chick.  Instead of running away from the hand--like any reasonable chick would do--she jumped into it, and she has been ours ever since.  Knowing what we did about her personality and her eventual appearance as an adult, we decided unanimously to name her "Chicky Gaga".       Chicky Gaga settled into her new home immediately.  Not only was she absolutely... read more
