Chicken Breed History:
The Standard lists the Netherlands as the Brabanter’s Country of origin; however, other literature states that this could be an ancient breed dating back further than these claims suggest. There are paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries that show birds very similar to Brabanters. Around the beginning of the 20th century they were nearly extinct in the Netherlands, but were recreated from different German breeds. This breed is closely related to Owl Beards and has been crossed with them for the breed’s survival in the past. While they are Ornamental they are also bred for their production of white eggs, which they lay fairly regularly. There eggs can be white white or slightly tinted.
The American Poultry Association has not yet recognized Cream and Gold Brabanters as a Standard Breed of Fowl.
Chicken Breed Comments / Experience:
I have found Brabanters to be a very friendly breed as well as an excellent egg layer. However, they can be flighty unless handled regularly and are somewhat difficult to really tame. They are active foragers, and are not as vulnerable to predators while ranging as many other crested fowl are. Their crest is tight and points forward, which does not block their vision. Along with their crest they have muffs and a beard.
