I have been making a whole grain feed for my layers, but they eat everything but the wheat. I'd like to adjust the recipe to reduce or eliminate the wheat, but what should I replace it with?

Recipe is:

4 part rye

9 part Barley

9 part Oats

9 part red wheat

4 part black oiled sunflower seeds

3 part Flax

1/2 part kelp meal

Free choice Oyster Shell

Millet (birdseed) is 11% protein and they love it.

Are you giving grit?

Flax can make eggs taste bad if too much- caution urged with that.

My chickens did not really like flaxseeds.

peas (split) don't need cooking prior to feeding: (24.5% protein)

From experience: just give them a break on the wheat, save it and offer it in small quantities. This should make them LOVE it. :)

I like to rotate grains, give them different things. They do love variety.

Thanks for the advice. No grit per se, but we use sand as litter in the coop.

I'll try to source white wheat instead of red and see if they like it better.
