Duck problem. HELP!

I noticed my gray runner Drake was limping today so I caught him to tend to that and noticed what I thought was dried poop on his vent but when I went to pull it off it would not come out and looked to be an intestine it is dried and brownish on the end but the part that was inside him looks very pink and is attached inside in fact most of it pulled back inside him please help

I am an avian specialist and I see these ocassionally. Sorry I missed this post until 18 months later, but in case someone else comes across this in the future, I recommend the following:

1. Separate the drake from females. Typically this is a problem affecting young, exuberant drakes. If you take away the temptation then their phallus will stay put and get the rest it sorely needs.
2. If the tissue is too swollen to replace or is black, green, dead then see an avian vet first.
3. If not, gently cleanse the phallus and, if possible without too much misery, lube it up with KY or similar water-soluble jelly and tuck it back inside the cloaca. Sometimes, if the duck is cooperative, you can try applying a hypertonic sugar solution to help shrink the swollen tissue. Most ducks are not this patient.
4. If it pops right back out and there is danger of it getting stepped on or beat up, go see an avian vet.

The most important steps the vet can provide that you can't are pain relief, anti-inflammatory drugs, and, in the case of a phallus that keeps popping back out, they can apply a couple of temporary sutures across the vent to hold the phallus in place while it heals. The procedure can be performed in most ducks while awake and using just a local anesthetic-- so not too expensive. Usually this is all that's needed and the sutures can come out in 10-14 days (often they pop out on their own). In very few cases, where the phallus has devitalized or become injured, or fails to heal after the initial vent sutures, then amputation is necessary. Some birds will have long-term complications from this, depending upon how the amputation is performed.

Keep him away from the females and it could take as long as 3 months for it to heal. I have read of many drakes getting over this but you need to keep it clean and make sure you keep it moist.

Oh man!!! Poor guy!!! He is already separated I am on my way home now and will make sure to try to keep it moist and to push it back inside him and get it clean thank you thank you thank you

He's not doing much better. I filled the run with about 6" water today so it will remain moist. But it hasn't retracted. He seems to be healthy

@tomynoks You need to put some vaseline or KY jelly on it and try to push it back inside. I don't know what you mean you filled the run with about 6' of water? eventually the injured part may just fall off but infection is a real worry triple antibiotic may be best or Neosporin both with out pain killer. Or vet.

Not a great pic. But the end is rotten smelling. I put him in a tub with about 6" of water to keep it constantly moist. Putting on neosporin now will get KY TODAY as well. My dog just had 5 puppies. Busy day!! Lol. The duck is eating and is otherwise in good health. Thanks for all your help.

Best way to keep it moist is using something like the KY or better yet triple antibiotic or neo especially if you smell rot. sounds like infection so another thing you might want to consider is an antibiotic.. Lots of info on here about prolapsed penis so look up on the search. Lets see if @casportpony can advise on what would be best. Any chance of a vet?
