Suddenly silent rooster

This morning bright and early I heard my rooster crowing. He sounded normal. He and the hens free range through the day. I noticed him at my back door and he looks like he is crowing but nothing comes out. Any ideas?

Check his neck for swelling, tumors, or foreign objects that could be stuck in his throat.
