Nest boxes

My girls are 3 1/2 months old. I am ready to get their nest boxes in order. What do I line them with?!

Do you have straw or hay available? Grass clippings?

The grass needs to dry out first. Consider lining the boxes with something softer, like feed bags, under the bedding. Fewer broken eggs that way, because the hens will 'rearrange' the bedding, and pull most of it out, no matter what you do. Mary

I use pine shavings from tractor supply in kitty litter trays...works great. If they poop in the box, I just take the tray out, clean it, and replace.

If I was going to let my hens hatch I would dig up a piece of turf a little bigger than the inside of the nest box and about 2 or 3 inches thick. This is the nest pad and it is placed inside the nest with the grass side down. Any straw or hay goes on top of this.
