Need some info on chicken breeds

What are yalls thoughts on the black jersey giants. And the Rhode island red. As far as which one would be a good duel purpose breed. Thanks

Both are dual purpose breeds. The RIR hens will be better layers. The JG roo will be a much bigger eating bird but will also take longer to reach full weight than the RIR. Lots of folks are looking at the breeds that go under monikers like Freedom Rangers or Red Rangers. They are decent layers and the males grow to a respectable weight about a month sooner than heritage breeds.

What exactly are you looking for in a breed?

The Red will be a better layer, and reach butcher size faster. The Giants will be bigger overall---sometimes. Hatchery birds often aren't that much larger than the other dual purpose breeds. Reds, from hatcheries, have a reputation for being aggressive. Giants are traditionally docile.
