Hello, My name is Jocelyn and i'm just starting to research this whole chicken business!! We are in the process of building a house on 5 acres and I want chickens. All i've done so far is read about them... and dream about what it will be like!! :) I want chickens for the eggs and to also teach my children (4 and 8 years old) and broaden their horizons. I just started the book Chick Days and its been a great read so far. We are getting into the winter season up here and we wont' be moving into our house for a couple more months so i'm presuming we won't be getting chickens for a bit... next warmer season. But i'll be wandering through this site and forums and reading as much as i can befor that day in preparation.
 
Hi, Jocelyn and welcome to BYC - great that you have joined us. I'm sure the whole family is excited on the new move and its a good idea to introduce your children to keeping animals, and its associated responsibilities - they will never forget the experience.

Awesome thanks so much! We are going to be building one and I've been peaking around in the coop section!! So many beautiful ones!! I'm def looking for beauty and function!! What would you say is the most important function you can't live without in your coop??

HI Jocelyn. I'm not far from you (relatively speaking, since we have folks from all over the country and the world here) in Northwestern Wyoming. I don't think my coop is on the coop pages, but if you click on the link under my extremely gorgeous photo, it'll take you to it.

We built a shed-type coop, and have a hoop run that we absolutely love. Wouldn't change a single thing about it, even after all this time, and it holds up to our extreme winds and the snow loads very well. Covered with reinforced mesh green house type clear plastic, it's so warm in the run that I raise my chicks out there in a heating pad cave. No heat lamps for me...ever. The links the other folks gave you are really excellent. The best thing (and sometimes the most confusing, if I were being totally honest) is going through the information and seeing how differently we all do things. But ultimately we all want the same thing......healthy birds, fresh eggs, and a little backyard entertainment. So pick and choose what advice appeals to you, what will work in your situation (after all, you're there, we're not

) and if something doesn't work, well, it's not etched in stone..change it to fit your needs. It's as easy and as complicated as that!
