Here in the sunshine state ,I don't have to worry about the cold as much as the heat. I haven't picked out a place for the coop yet ,but looking at a couple of spots under trees . How can I keep my girls cool, will they go for the coolest place ( I am having them run free in the yard ) or the coop which will be in the shade,

They will generally be more inclined to hang out in the shade - not only cooler, but greater protection for them. Personally, i put my feed / water stations in such areas.

That and whatever available breeze. I also dampen the soil in a shady corner of their run daily so they can scratch down into the cool dirt. Best wishes and thanks for joining BYC!

Keeping your birds cool and comfortable will be a big priority (I used to raise chickens in FL). Making sure their coop has a lot of ventilation, providing plenty of shade, setting out extra waterers, these are some of the things you can do. Also learn what signs to watch for that your flock is getting stressed from the heat & humidity. You'll get lots of help on the FL state thread so drop in there and say hello.

a location under shade trees is good on some counts but, it also is a raptor magnet, & raccoons can use it as a means to get on the roof of your coop or into your run.

If you have an enclosed run - putting a top on it will prevent those attacks from above.
