Personally I think production white leghorns are the most economical feed to egg wise.

I prefer Red Stars, and those are a hybrid.

I've never had leghorns though, so I can't really compare. Ive tried several other breeds, and the red stars are really good at laying right through winter here in Colorado, where the cold usually stops most breeds for the season. I've read leghorns are good with the cold too, though.

Red stars mature super fast, too. Chick to laying pullets in about 20 weeks beat out all the other breeds I've tried. My second fave are Barred Rocks. Rocks are good with cold weather too.

Nothing beats a good white leghorn. Feed to egg or when they start laying.
