Hello, we just finally got our chicks this past weekend....two that are ~5 weeks old and two that are probably a few days to a week old. All different breeds...1 bantam, 1 brahma, 1 cochin and 1 rhode island red( I think)....Will they all get along once they grow up? We're separating the younger chicks from the older ones until the younger ones are bigger. They do get some time together to get acquainted. Any advice?
Thanks
Joan

Chicks generally get along together IF they grow up together. But, your younger ones are much too young to be with your older chicks. At this point the 5 week old chicks will probably bully and peck at them. They have probably started working on their pecking order, and of course very young chicks don't stand a chance again them.

Hi Joan and welcome to BYC. Keeping them separate is important right now, but if they can see each other, even while separated, it will greatly help the integration process. You may find this forum useful - https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/11/raising-baby-chicks and you'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre - https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

Welcome!

As you have already received links to some good starting points and good advice, I will just wish you all the best.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

Thank you everyone for the advice, I will continue to keep them separate until the little ones are older/ bigger and the bigger ones do peck when we let them mingle for a few mins at a time but we intervene . I will check out the links thanks for the info too. Were crazy about chickens and are very excited to have these new chicks. Just want to make sure they stay healthy physically and psychologically.
