My female rhea laid her first egg today. It seems like I have been waiting forever for it! My male has already hollowed out a nest and although he is not sitting she laid it right beside the nest so it won't be long before he sits I don't think. Now the big question is, to incubate or to eat!!

Congrqats. I say incubate!. That egg would be a meal for 4

Thanks for your kind thoughts on Opa's thread. Being home around my animals and hiking the property every day really is healing.
(except for the sore muscles)

It doesn't seem that long ago that you picked them up. What was the weight of the egg? I like to know the weight of the egg so that I can figure the chicken egg equivalency.

It was actually a pretty small one for rhea standards - 465g. Still would make a pretty decent omelette though!!

Oh wow! 465g for a 'pullet' egg!

That's pretty amazing.
I'd eat it. Well... I mean, I'd maybe manage to eat HALF of it. LOL!

Do you know how many eggs a year they're supposed to lay?

Congrats on the first egg Vicki, I think I would have to eat the first on just to try it out! Then incubate away. Do you have an incubator that will accommodate those enormous eggs?
