Cuttlefish are a waste of money. I absolutely love them, but they only live between one and two years old and cost over a thousand to get. I have heard that they are near impossible to breed in captivity as well. However, we have had several stingrays in the past in a 300 gallon. They are neat, but emotionless. I have never had a stingray that was "happy" to see me or anything like our Oscars or Red Devils do. We have also had horseshoe crabs before and those were fun to watch. My friend has also had a few octopuses at his house, but they are tricky to keep in the aquarium. It is also common to have Alligators and Crocodiles where I live as well. A guy I used to know several years ago had a 5' American Alligator named Waffles and he basically had an entire room dedicated to it in his house. Waffles was given to him from a family that could no longer afford him.Anyone have any unusual/exotic aquatic pets besides fish? I wish I had a dwarf cuttle fish or a dwarf stingray (if they even exist). Are salt water aquariums hard to maintain?
Where do you live? Certain tricks work in certain areas. Or what kind of wildlife are eating your fish? I assume Florida because your friend was keeping an Oscar outside, but it would be best to know for sure.I have never had a aquarium but I do have some freshwater ponds in my yard the only problem is this: stray cats & blue herons!!! I can't keep anything more expensive than a goldfish because every time I treat myself to some huge expensive koi it gets swallowed whole by the local wildlife!!! I've tried nets and other barriers but NOTHING works. Any suggestions? if they work are there any fish suggestions? I'd like to try something besides goldfish and koi. I don't clean out the ponds because they are huge and way too much work to drain so if someone has a fish suggestion the fish would need to be tolerant of the conditions and they'd have to get along with the pre-existing fish I have and they would have to be tolerant of the heat and the bad winters. My friend had an Oscar in her pond but it got killed so I'm thinking that's not the best idea...
