Rick's Chicks are thinking of inviting a roster in with us (New Hampshire Red chicken (10) and a friend is giving us a Roster, does he need to be like us ? Or will any male do, does he have to come from a brown egg laying family or can he be from a white egg laying family. We would like to start having Chicks but we don't want to waste our time and money. Also if it comes from a white egg laying family will they be his bread or will they be New Hampshire Red?

Thank you,
Rick's Chicks

He would only need to be the same breed if you want purebreds. No other reason.

Depends on what you're after. If you just want chicks, any rooster will do. If you want a specific outcome, you need a specific breed of rooster.

If your hens are NHR, and the rooster is another breed, the chicks will be crossbred, not either parent's breed.

Best wishes.
