My name is Tony and my grandfather and I are just starting to build a chicken coop so that we can raise some chickens. We know not what we are getting into but hope that it will be fun.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Sounds like a great project. Check out the coops forum above. One main thing to remember is allow 4 sq.feet per bird inside the coop - not counting nestboxes and roosts. And 10 sq.feet in an outside run. Hope you will document and photograph the process - then add it to the coop section for someone else .

Welcome to BYC, Tony! Glad you decided to join our flock. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck to you and your grandfather in your new adventure. Do you have any breed preference?

You have come to the right place for all the fun and learning! Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry...https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

If you need some ideas on your coop build, check out our coops pages too for more helpful tips and hints from our members...https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coops

Just remember, 4 to 5 square feet per bird in the coop, 10 square feet per bird in the run. Never cram in birds as they will turn on each other. And don't forget the venting in the eaves or ceiling. Let that air fly up there to remove moisture and keep the air clean. Chickens are susceptible to respiratory ailments in bad air.

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and if you have any questions along the way, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!
