I found one of my day old chicks dead this morning. One minute she was fine running around and next time we looked she was flat out on the coop floor. I wondered if mum could have stepped on her and caused it, otherwise I have no idea.

I'm really sorry about that.

I've heard that chicks can die from choking. We lost one chick to (we assume) being stepped on by a goat. We nearly lost another to a hen landing on her while trying to jump up to roost.
Accidents happen when you own animals, even with the best of care.

Best of luck with your remaining chicks!

It is also common for chicks to hatch with deformities you just can't see, like people. Maybe the valves in it's heart weren't big enough, and it died of old blood slipping back into the heart, making the heart work harder to pump blood and making it susceptible to heart attacks... maybe it died of kidney failure, or a malfunctioning liver, which poisoned it's blood.. maybe it had a brain deformity, or just 'failed to thrive'. Maybe it WAS stepped on by mom... whatever the case it is dead, and I'm sorry for your loss. :(
