diatomaceous earth - did I buy right kind?

Hello,

Finally the feed store got DE in. They didn't know there was more than one kind, and couldn't tell me if this was it. I'm guessing that since it doesn't mention pools on the bag, and is listed as an environmentally friendly insect killer, this SHOULD be the one? It doesn't say a thing about food grade either though.

Anybody know how I can tell for sure? It is "Safer Brand" and says "ant and crawling insect killer". It also says not to contaminate feed with it.

I had also heard (if anyone knows this as well) that it can be fed to cats/chickens to control worms, but I'm thinking garlic is safer?

Thanks!!!

Re: diatomaceous earth - did I buy right kind?

Nope. If it says something like 85% Silicon, it is dangerous around your birds. It MUST say FOOD GRADE or it is not. Period. Don't feed it to any animals at all. Food Grade DE is perfectly safe for animals and humans to eat.
DO NOT put that in your feed. Either use it where animals can't get to it or take it back to them for a refund.

You CAN use DE for interbal and external parasites on/in chickens and other pets and livestock, BUT not the kind you got. There are different grades of DE and the only one's you should use for your animals will say food grade or feed grade. The difference between the two is that the food grade is ok for humans too but the feed grade is not recommended for human consumotion. If it actually states not to 'contaminate' feed with it, I wouldn't use it anywhere near my animals.

Re: diatomaceous earth - did I buy right kind?

Thanks SO much. It says 77.69% silicon dioxide from diatomaceous earth.

I did ask and they said I can return it within a week, because it cost more than the 50# feed and I can't waste that kind of money.

I guess I have to keep looking then? Nowhere on the bag does it say anything about "food grade" or "feed grade" and the folks at the feed store had no idea that there was more than one kind. .... sigh

Thanks so much for the info!

Feedstore folks are notoriously ignorant of what they ought to be experts on. YOU have to know exactly what to tell them and be firm about it. They will even argue with you when they are completely in the wrong.
