sneezing and nasal discharge - should I worry? UPDATE: FULL RECOVERY!!

I've seached the archives but didn't find any pertinent info...

One of my girls has been sneezing for a few days and now she has nasal discharge, dirt sticks to her nose and she is having trouble breathing as it clogs up - she is otherwise acting normal, eating and drinking and fussing about (no idea if she is laying though).

Does she have a cold?

Is this contagious?

What can I do to relieve her discomfort?

She is my favorite girl and I would be devastated if anything happened to her sad

Thank you for your time,

TD

What sort of bedding is in use? The dust from bedding can cause sneezing, but im not sure about nasal discharges.
Chickens do not get colds, according to some posts on the forum.

Re: sneezing and nasal discharge - should I worry? UPDATE: FULL RECOVERY!!

same bedding as always, wood chips...

her nose is really leaking though, enough that dirt is sticking to it and she is having trouble breathing - other hens peck the clumps of dirt off her beak sad

if it's not a cold, what could it be?

the rest of the flock seems fine...

Ok.

Do you know what colour the discharge is?
Does the bedding give off a lot of dust?

ETA- Please put him into solitary confinement in case it is contagious

Re: sneezing and nasal discharge - should I worry? UPDATE: FULL RECOVERY!!

the discharge looks clear but it was hard to tell as the light was not good and her beak was dirty, she wouldn't let me wipe it off or hold still long enough to see - should I go in the coop with hubby and a flashlight to get a better answer?

the coop isn't dustier than normal, she's been in there for six weeks or so now...

i did put in a box with dry sand mixed with a bit of clean ashes so they could dust bathe two days ago, could she be allergic?

ie, can allergies cause mucus and sneezing?

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP, this girl means more to me than anyone else but you could understand...

PS: I have nowhere to put her for solitary confinement, that's my big problem right now sad

Re: sneezing and nasal discharge - should I worry? UPDATE: FULL RECOVERY!!

Do you have a cat travel box or crate or similar, that you could put her in. Is there any ashes in her feathers, that may cause the sneezing. If possible, it would be great if you could get a look at the nasal discharge.

ETA- Does the discharge smell?

Re: sneezing and nasal discharge - should I worry? UPDATE: FULL RECOVERY!!

OK it's a clear liquid coming from her nostrils (it makes bubbles!), she sneezed about five times while I was examining her.

Eyes are normal and clear/bright.

I listened for coughing but didn't hear anything but I am such a novice...

Am I worried for nothing?

hmm

Re: sneezing and nasal discharge - should I worry? UPDATE: FULL RECOVERY!!

Does she have any of these symptoms?
Swelling of the face,
wheezing
sneezing
nasal discharge,
conjunctivitis (including ‘bubbles’ at the corner of the eye),
eyes glued shut
and open-mouth breathing

Those highlighted in bold are symptoms we have already established. Any others on that list?

Re: sneezing and nasal discharge - should I worry? UPDATE: FULL RECOVERY!!

sounds like she has an upper respiratory problem. due a search on upper respiratory disease.  Feel the distarge with your fingers. if it feels like boogers you need to give her meds such as duramycin.  treat everybody. if you see bubbles in eyes treat fast! it can and does kill if not treated.

there are 2 sides to every story.  A wise person listens to both before coming to a conclusion.  smile
