They are about the same as a turkey hen that often breeds once or twice and then lays a nest of eggs over a 2 plus week period. 

That could be from an internal problem. While chicks are growing they sometimes have what is called "failure to thrive" which means their  unable to utilize their food and water.  So sorry.
